The MTL trade that makes the most sense

Created by: joshelkin

Description
The Isles and Habs seem to make sense as trade partners in a couple variation of deals.

I do not think they'll be willing to pay the reported exorbitant price Bergevin is asking for Pacioretty. So scratch him from any deal.

Jeff Petry would be nice, but his name hasn't been widely reported as available. Next.

It's reasonable to believe that Plekanec will be available should MTL go into selling mode. He is a pending UFA whom the Habs would probably not bring back should they decide to go full blown rebuild.

Lindgren doesn't have a significant NHL sample size (11 games) on his resume. And with Price's massive extension looming, who knows how often Lindgren will see the ice. Could be worth moving him somewhere while he has value.

MTL best case: De Haan, Dal Colle, 1st (higher)
MTL worst case: Dal Colle, 1st (higher), 2nd (lower)

NYI best case: Plekanec, Lindgren, 2nd
NYI worst case: Plekanec, Lindgren
Trades
NYI
  1. Lindgren, Charlie
  2. Plekanec, Tomas ($3,000,000 retained)
  3. 2018 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
(2nd is the lowest of MTL/CHI/WSH and 100% conditional on CDH signing an extension)
MTL
  1. Dal Colle, Michael
  2. De Haan, Calvin
  3. 2018 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
1st round pick is higher of CGY or NYI

CDH is obviously hurt, but MTL would have his negotiating rights and the first team to be able to hammer out a long term deal with him.

*Conditions* - If CDH signs with MTL, the Isles get the lowest of their 2018 2nd's as the trade is then lopsided in MTL's favor (Plekanec a rental)

If CDH does NOT re-sign with MTL, the Isles do not get a second round pick. The Isles would then have to give MTL the lower of NYI/CGY 2nds instead.

Montreal needs a #1D or #1C that can play now.

O.E.L. fits the bill perfectly. So does John Tavares.

They have a legit shot at OEL. Top Pick, and 2 Top 6 players is the asking price on the street.
I think OEL cap hit for the next 2 years is like 6.5$
Price and Weber step decline after 3-4 years (maybe maybe not but reasonable to think so, so have to go in Win next 3 years mode not wait for the player they draft to mature, plus they have METE)

If I am Montreal I am giving up the 1st round pick except to protect it for the #1 overall selection (offer 2019 1st round and a 2rd if that happens).
I would trade any 2 players except Price and Drouin, they won't want Weber anyways.
If I lose Galchuck, or Gallagher it hurts a little but Galchuck is never going to fit in Montreal and Gallagher is great but trade-able.
I would give up Max Pac but word is they won't want him....though seems to be the easiest 3 way team trade in history Max goes somewhere else and Arizona gets the player going the other way.
A team with OEL, WEBER, and PRICE would look pretty good to a Unrestricted Free agent #1 center.

Landing a TOP 5 Left D that goes perfect with Weber is worth the Price.

People might say wait for Karrlson or Doughty but Montreal won't be able to afford them with Price and Weber.

This trade is not bad. Is De Haan officially out for the season?

Did you even bother to read the description and/or trade conditions or just jump straight to a conclusion?

Officially unofficially. He won't dress again this year. Thought it was a creative way for MTL to get first crack and keeping him long term. And if that doesn't work out, they get an extra pick instead

I like the idea actually. I just don't think they will have the money to sign him long term with Weber, Petry and Alzner locked for the next 4 years... but we take the cap hit until the end of the season and get a 2nd with Dal Colle and the highest 1st. Good job

injured or not i will take De Haan and a 1st if it giving us the highest one that puts us in place to Draft Noah Dobson at best and Ryan Merkley at worst .(win win )
Dal Cole im not sold on and would rather Toews but that is just splitting heirs

Webers contracts actually great
if he retires at 37 lets say it stipulates 6m of the cap hit for the remaining for 4 years falls on NSH
(if he is bought out to )

Not a big risk for MTL and they are getting a 1st pick with 2 high prospect NHL ready player (I know he is out for the season)
But MTL can make him sign a 2 y deal Minor/nhl contract... all that for Lindgren and bye bye Pleky!
It's a small improvement for MTL... would need more to get back in a winning mode but it's a start

Any deal with Plekanec as the main piece for a 1st is worth consideration.

Let's break it down:
1. Plekanec @50% for a 1st (the higher of CGY/NYI): easy yes from Montreal
2. Lindgren for Dal Colle: Not really interesting to Montreal, I'm not high on MDC anymore like at all and Lindgren should be a valuable backup goalie for us. Then again, if we get at least a mid-range 1st for Plekanec, I'm not against it. I don't see the incentive for the Isles though, they already have Sorokin and Söderström in the pipeline as future NHL goalies, don't they?
3. CDH for a conditional 2nd (if he re-signs): Hard to pass on this if I'm the Habs, there's no risk involved. If we see CDH as someone we can use, a low 2nd round pick is not too steep of a price. If not, nothing is lost.

All in all, as a Montreal fan I'd do it. In all fairness though, I don't know why the Isles would, haha.
