Montreal could trade Petry for a cold ham sandwich, and reunite Kalrzner.
Dallas fans think they'll have enough cap space to sign Tavares. They might need a goalie more, but sometimes improving on defense makes that less of an issue.
Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver are going to sell big at the trade deadline, and open up boatloads of cap space, but still have some promising young players to build around. Buffalo are pretty thin on defense and have a ton of cap space.
I like to think that Carlson has made good friends in Washington, enjoys being a team leader, loves being a part of one of the best power plays in the league, year in, year out, and will be able to make the same total money, over the rest of his hall of fame playing career, by staying put and helping Washington win a Cup or two.
But Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Columbus, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Winnipeg, Vegas, Colorado, New Jersey, Edmonton, Carolina and Arizona are all under 72 million in contracts this year. Under an 80 million cap, they have room to offer an 8M, 1 year deal to any free agent that strikes their fancy. Which of those teams has a right handed defenseman contributing more offense than Carlson?
Economically, he should take a long term deal, so that even if he gets hurt, he can still keep getting paid. In terms of short term gain, a long term deal can be slightly more front loaded,so he can get more than 8M next year, to invest as he pleases, while staying at a manageable cap hit that doesn't keep his team from competing.
