What's the deal with DELL? My idea about him. What do you think?

Description
He is great backup and he would be for years. BUT, I don't really think he is starter caliber goalie. There would be some (I don't want to say stupid) GM who would offer him 3-4 mil per season (Chayka) but it would really be a bad decision for team signing him as a starter. Look at Darling as a comparison. Dell is just like him. Not a starter but one of the best backups. For his future it would be good to sign for 2.5-3 mil in SJS and be 20-30 games a year backup. At anytime Jones has slump or is injured or any other reason to play Dell he can step up and be hero. Jones is no1 in SJ and would be for years. Aaron Dell is great goalie but would be average or worse as a starter. I just hope he would make right decision in summer. I don't want him to end up like Darling. And Darling would be .905 max starter in Carolina (for good of CAR I hope I'm wrong, it's just how I see it).

What do you think?

How can someone be both great and not good enough to be a starter?

I said great as a backup, not good enough to be needed starter for team in need. He is not a solution to any team. Carolina put their faith in Darling and it didn't pay off. So would be with Dell if any team signs him.

Sammy, if we could predict the future on backup goalies and their potential upside, we wouldn't be CapFriendly GMs. Teams will elevate and make a deal with San Jose most likely next June. What is Dell? A backup NHL goalie or the Dominick Hasak (when he was a Hawk). His trade value probably isn't that much. Dell will probably sign with a team that will give up a greater opportunity to be a starter.

I have to agree with Palhal. We simply don't know. What of dubnyk? Finally given a chance to start for MIN and he's flourished. What of Talbot? Last year was REALLY good for EDM as a first time starter, but year 2??? It's a very hard thing to predict. Someone will give him a chance and he'll be the one to prove himself.

I mean, I hope he succeeds and will be really good. I wish him all best if he is new starter somewhere. I'm just saying my opinion on that and I really see Darling comparison as best. Similar career paths and everything. This is just my opinion and how I see it.

Well, Sammy, you're right their career paths so far might be similar. It's the next seven years that's in question.

I'm really curious what the future for both of them will hold. As you said, we never know!

I think that if SJS wouldn't have chance on playoffs this year, they would definitely trade him, and I would recommend to trade him even if they make playoffs (well nobody would know that on TDL, lol), because of last 2 playoffs experiences, where Jones played all or most of the games. Reason why Jones doesn't have better numbers this year (generaly in regular seasons) is because he needs to play all the time (as in playoffs) and then he starts to perform as top goalie (it seems to me this way). But Dell is good goalie though and i would like to see him in SJS next season, but I also want SJS to be competitive, and as Jones is number one, he needs to have full trust and play max number of games.
