TDL trades with Buffalo, Arizona Unusual playoff lineup

Created by: Eli
Team: 2017-18 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 20, 2018
Published: Jan. 21, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't need a fourth line. Defense wins championships. TBL made it to the finals with seven defensemen. Why not try eight? How many overtime games are decided when one team's defensemen, used to playing sixty minutes, start to fall apart around eighty? So why not just bring eighty minutes worth of defensemen. Dress three lines of forwards, plus an extra faceoff specialist/penalty killer. Win. Plus, that way, if one or two defenders aren't clicking, you can move them up to wing, instead of needing to stress about whom to dress or whom to sit, on defense. Since fourth line wingers are used to playing 12 minutes, if you add a couple of twenty minute defensemen instead, you've gained a huge advantage in endurance. Obviously the salary cap numbers mean Franson stays in the minors until the end of the regular season.

That CHI trade hurts the Caps a lot. You're trading a young top 6 player and not replacing him. Look at your lineup. You have Stephenson in your top 6, Beagle (who's bad) on your 3rd line. For some reason Orpik is on your 4th line.

That’s probably fair for Scandella. It’s just so hard for th Sabres to part with one of the 2 top4 dmen they have

I thought the same thing. Scandella is a decent player, and thats a nice return, but he has been our second best d, and the dropoff after him is steep. Hes also been a solid guy in the room from what i hear, which may be even in shorter supply than competent d.

I think this decision comes down to if Bots think that Guhle can play top4 minutes next year. Ideally you get dahlin

The Caps are down to three top four defensemen after losing Alzner and Shattenkirk in free agency and Schmidt to expansion. Orpik has been pressed back into playing 20 minutes a night and his plus/minus has dropped from the leaderboard last year to just below even this year. I doubt Orpik gets traded, because he brings a lot of grit and leadership to the Caps. More likely Johansen or Djoos is the centerpiece of a deal for a minute-eating lefty, most likely from a team out of the playoffs, and, yes, is certainly could be from a team with decent odds of drafting a really good left handed defenseman this summer: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=310545

Scandella plays a ton of minutes and does pretty well. He could instantly make the Caps a more competitive team. But if he's not available, I'm sure other guys are. Is there a different trade for him that could work? Thanks.

Connolly's more of a middle six player with the Caps, although at the pace he's scoring goals he could certainly be more than that elsewhere. Chiasson's a bottom six player anywhere in the NHL that has space for one. Burakovsky is a professional hockey fan. Nice work if you can get it. He could totally score thirty goals playing with Toews, which is why Chicago justmight trade next year's first round pick for him. They're betting he and DeBrincat bring them back to the playoffs. Washington's betting that's a lottery pick. I might have put too much thought into this.

That's not a typo. And that's not Brayden Schenn at right wing, either. One trend I've noticed in the playoffs in the last couple years is that if a defenseman gets injured, his team usually loses, unless they are Pittsburgh, in which case nothing matters, because Jaromir Jagr hexed the Caps. I don't think it's a coincidence that the Lightning dressed seven D and made it to the finals a couple years back. Defense wins championships. Since Orpik and Schenn are both kind of slow, but super-tough, I thought they could get some licks in as fourth line wingers, and still take a few shifts on defense, especially if there's an injury, a penalty kill, or if someone else is getting tired during overtime. How much do most NHL coaches use their fourth lines of forwards in overtime, anyway? Better to have a couple extra stay at home defensemen.

Oh, and CR, I switched Beagle and Bouma's spots. They're both mostly in the lineup to kill penalties and break the puck out after winning defensive zone draws together. Each can take a shift at wing when necessary.
