As I wrote in my summary I don't like using Tanev as trade with the Leafs, however there had been a recent report out east that the leafs offered Nielsen and 3 round pick for Gudbranson, then a month later offered Liljigren and a 1st for Tanev. If the Leafs don't think that they can compete for a cup then they wouldn't have gone for Marleau and tried to get Thorton. I don't like the Leafs but I do see a small window right now where they could have a chance at the cup. The only thing they are lacking is a solid defence, their current corp is horrible. Gardner is a poor mans Hedican, he should have been moved last summer when his stock was the highest.
don't know why you say, the leafs have a small window for a Cup. they have many players, important players that are elcs that are under leafs control for years. and don't listen to these silly reports on what was offered by the leafs. the leafs under lou and shanny are so closed mouth. now if reporters or posters on capfriendlhy want to make stuff up, that's all it is. fact is leafs really only had the money for Marleau not Thornton and Marleau, and even the Marleau addition might have been a mistake for the long term cap cost. and again to say the leafs the leafs defence is horrible, another falsehood. could it be better, yes. leafs are right in the middle of GAA, so their defence is hardly horrible. all teams want to improve defence, the leafs are no different. by take a look at the leafs defence, hainsey and Reilly have been, sometimes very good. zaitsev has been good, unfortunately injured now, but had to play with the inconsistent gardiner, borgman has been good an sometimes not so good as rookie, carrick has played well again now he's in the lineup, Dermot recently recalled, looks good as rookie, and polak yep is 6th/7th Dman. having tanev isn't going vault the leafs to the promised land. I don't even know why tanev should be traded he has two and a half years left in his contract. canucks have lots of time to decide.
but the leafs really aren't good enough this year or next to be real cup contenders even with tanev or an upgrade on defence.
back to gardiner, yes the leafs are going to have to live with probably for next year too. but he likely won't be resigned as a ufa. I write a lot about the leafs since I see them a lot, and this site has lots of leafs write-ups, but I'm actually an oiler and jet fan, if that is possible. leafs might be setting themselves up for good cost efficient defence is a couple of years with borgman, Dermot, Reilly, zaitsev, and liljgren. might even have money for ufa or two .
