Edmonton is not in the playoffs because their defense needs changes. Sekera is a sieve and Benning should be in the AHL. Last year everything clicked, this year a number of players are having off years. With a few good moves, defense, next year will be different.
Sekera has decent possession numbers, despite supporting a group of forwards not known for their defensive prowess. Can't blame him for the oilers not making the playoffs. He was out most of the season, and is getting below .900 save% when he does play.
Benning should be playing less minutes, but he's not a guy that you should expect to be capable of covering for forward and goaltending inconsistencies.
Talbot is decent enough, but again, not good enough to mask the other issues in the lineup. He can backstop a decent team, but he can't carry a weak team. You know who has been doing just that for several years? Carey Price.
The only thing the oilers can do with their defense until the end of next year, due to NMCs, is give them more support or trade one of the ones they should keep for a RHD.
You can hope for things to be better next year, but in terms of making moves, the options are limited, and you'll likely see more of the same next season.
