id take that trade as a hawks fan. keith is still good, but is showing his age. a return like this would be good for the hawks to get out of that contract before it gets bad.

No, It's no joke. The Clarkson permanent LTIR is nothing is both teams as Garrison's final few months. What it gives Montreal is 8 years of 7.8m of cap freedom. If wanting cap freedom, Habs won't get a better offer.
Habs can't rebuild with 7.8m of more cap freedom?

I keep Weber as a mentoring vet if that's the best we can get. You can't actually suggest we should just dump him for a 2nd. And Weber will likely retire before his contract ends anyway, I don't think he or Philly who offered that contract intended that he would play it out. He should still fetch a tremendous return from a team that can afford him.

If someone really wants Weber they won't be making a lowball ass offer like this. We're not giving him for practically free at this point. What's the problem with having him anyway? We can afford his cap hit so what?

Not that high 2nd, considering how good VGK has been this season.

If Montreal is desperate enough to move that contract right now, they can still get more than that. A first round pick, at least.

People crap on that Weber contract all the time... And people that do, really don't know a thing about hockey. Take the time to look up the actual salary being paid in that deal vs the cap hit. Whoever acquires Weber won't be "stuck" with him. He'll be tradeable. If contracts like Pronger and Datsyuk can be traded, Weber can be tradeable.

All of that being said... that is on the assumption that near his contract end he'll suck. All kinds of d-men have played in this league past the age of 40. It's possible that he'll play past the age of 40. D-men who do play until that age are d-men with exceptional hockey IQ, something he has.

All of that to say that I'm not totally against trading Shea Weber, but if he's dealt, he gets two good assets back from a contending team.

It's funny how a guy like Toews can tweet about being happy that Weber leaves the conference, and a goalie like Price can say he misses Weber (comments from two superstars in the league) yet Jabroni hockey fans on a page like this can say he's worth 2 salary dumps and a 2nd round pick.

Get it together people. You really look bad when you say Shea Weber is worth nothing on the market.

Gee, Monster1974, seems like you don't thing about hockey. FYI, the reason that Arizona trades for those contracts is that they don't actually pay any $$$$ money out for them. Pronger, Bolland contracts were paid by insurance companies when they want on LTIR. Red Wings could not afford the Datsyuk's 7m cap hit, despite the fact he had retired from the NHl. So please to compare those contracts to Weber's is laughable.

Get it together Monster. You really look bad.

You're right Montreal can afford the 8m now and maybe for few years. The trade was a legitimate one to give Montreal long term cap space, and Vegas would take on Weber's contract and probably good play now, but with the possibility of having a bad contract in the future . There is no right or wrong answer now, but in eight years we will know better.

Look at Weber's ACTUAL salary the last three years of his contract and get back to me.

Well, I know what he actual salary is. Trading three years of a cap dump is lot tougher than one year like , Datsyuk's. And the other players were long term LTIRs, hardly comparable. It's like you're begging someone to take Weber off the Canadian roster. Like it or not Weber's remaining 8.5 years is a big concern. And teams who want to spend 7.6m on a player can find a good one via UFA, without giving up assets. Trading value is different that playing value.

Well 8 year is far away - can't make predictions that far.
