Holtby would get Hoffman+++, Niskanen and Burakovsky could definitely work in a Karlsson deal so actually the caps are overpaying slightly

You’re completely undervaluing holtby. He’s a vezina winner and has been top 3 in the league the last 3-4 years. It’s hard to come by starting goaltenders

Top 3 goalie with .914 and 2.78 GAA. Its obvious his stats were padded because he was playing behind a presidential trophy team. 31/31 Teams would rather have a Franchise Defender than a Franchise Goalie (That can be argued he isnt even a Franchise Goalie)

None of these trades are realistic lmao
Edit (well AA and Orpik trades are but the major ones not at all)

Andreas Athanasiou isn't going anywhere at least not for one late first round pick.

Montreal is not trading 2 young players and a 1st for an old centre when they are re building

I like the "realistic trading and signings"
Then you start with Holtby burk and Nisky for Hoffman and Karlsson. Also signing Carlson to 6x6... AND to top it all off your over the cap... this is SOOOO realistic... ???

You're all overvaluing Karlsson's offense and overlooking his lack of defense. The guy starts 56% of his shifts ahead of the red line and is -26 this year, in only 46 games played. Over 82 games, that's a pace for "gonna be suck this year." https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/k/karlser01.html

Karlsson is recovering from an injury. Or maybe this is how recovered he gets. He may not be capable of playing even 20 minutes a night at peak performance anymore. Meanwhile, Brooks Orpik starts only 44% of his shifts in the offensive zone and is only -7, in 52 games. Yes, that's still negative, but at least he's not Erik Karlsson. https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/o/orpikbr01.html

The one actually available player you're obtaining above is Hoffman, who is worth a maximum of Brett Connolly, because he's got one less goal than Connolly this year, is three years older, makes three times as much money, was drafted four rounds later, but scored more in the last three seasons. Next season, Connolly will outscore him again for less money. That's the ceiling. Selling low on Burakovsky, who is as good as Connolly or Hoffman, but has been benched or possibly injured this year? Doesn't make sense if you're serious about building two years out. Neither does trading Orpik, who will be off the books by then. Pick a goal. That makes it easier to plan for it.

By that logic, Carey Price should head to the AHL because his numbers this year are .907 sv% and 2.92 GAA. I'm a Pens fan and I still think it's delusional to call Holtby not a franchise goalie. Putting up average numbers behind the questionable defense on that team this year is pretty impressive.

I'm not saying I would trade Karlsson for him, but your argument is pretty ridiculous.

That’s the cost on Backstrom. He’s a 1 center on any team he goes to. Nice try

Like I said Holtby is still behind one of the best defense in the league while Price is behind one of the worst. If you watched both goalies play you can tell there is a skill difference. Price is having an off year for sure, but he isn't getting any help from his defense

He's worth that, but it makes no sense for a team like Montreal to pay that
