why does SJ want Johnson when Dell is one of the best backups in the league.

I don't see why they would want to retain so much money. They need money for free agency next year and in order to trade at the draft. Speaking of the draft, I think that is when they're going to try to pull something big off with Kane. Also, Johnson to San Jose doesn't make much sense.

I should have noted that move as a move that happens assuming SJS trades Dell for help up front at the deadline instead of losing him in the off-season for nothing.

They are only retaining $2.4M until the end of the year. All players involved are not under contract next year. Johnson to SJS - see my reply above.
