In the GM Game 2017-18 i'm not wanting to trade Phaneuf (right now) and i have Brodie. Now Ottawa's left side REALLY needs improvement. Sure, he's not a top pairing d-man or anything but is a good second pairing guy.

It's currently Oduya, Borowiecki, Claesson, and an imaginary Marc Methot replacement. Yikes.

A couple of important bits of information that help explain the trade:

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this, but at least Phaneuf can hopefully finish his contract and improves the left side for the Kings right now. Gaborik hasn't been healthy in a long time and his three years older than Phaneuf with the same term and similar money now that Ottawa is retaining. I'm not Shore if a 4th line upgrade makes up for that factor. smile

if people ever wondered if Sens owner Melnyk was tight on money. This deal proves that. The trade does absolutely nothing to help the roster in anyway

I'd be worried about how karlsson views this exact comment. Will he resign knowing his owner cares more about his money vs winning?

I think that what the Sens are banking on.....an unhealthy Gaborik. Saves cap room, and insurance pay his salary.

Gaborik is healthy for the moment, but hasn't played more than 69 in the past 6 years. He averaged about 53 games per season over the past 5 years not including this season (since we don't know how many he'll finish with). A better salary dump would have been with Vegas though for either grabovski or clarkson.

Didn't theu already approach Phaneuf about waiving his no trade at the expansion draft? I don't think sending him to Vegas was an option.

What do you mean an imaginary Marc Methot replacement?

Gaborik can apparently be exposed in the looming expansion draft while Phaneuf would have been a must-protect. they are thinking ahead.

The next expansion draft is in 2020 when the arena is ready ! The contract expires in 2021, doesn't do much

LA wins. This just proves how cheap Melnyk really is. Ouch...

Kings win. Difference between Gaborik and Phaneuf, is while Phaneuf may be more expensive he can still play as a solid second pairing defenseman. The question I ask is, does this move make LA cup contenders? Then to answer that- I doubt it. The Kings win this, but this was inevitably a bad move by them. LA even without Gaborik have loaded themselves with hard to move contracts. In my opinion, LA should have taken the same path as the Rangers and rebuilt a few years back.

So...Dorion gets re-signed and he does this? I mean, Phaneuf is kind of a cap dump, but retaining 25% is about fair. But what's the deal with Gaborik? The guy's 35, I think, and he can't seem to stay healthy. Kings win.

I don't know why everyone thinks this is such a huge failure on Ottawa's part....Phaneuf's play in Ottawa much more likely profiles him as a third-pairing guy. Nick Shore might be the best player in the deal.

Wow, I did not see that coming. I wasn't expecting a trade until the deadline or the day before. Its no dought that LA won this deal. Gaborik is basically a cap dump and Nick Shore is a rookie centerman. I still think that LA needs some scoring help if they are going to make the playoffs.

Shore has played 221 NHL games over 4 seasons; hardly a rookie.

This is interesting in how they view the whole Doughty situation. As of now, Phaneuf and Martinez are the only defensemen under contract by then. Something major will likely happen between now and then regarding the defense, so there's probably not much to look into. They'll likely let Muzzin walk, so they'll have to make big decisions on Forbort, LaDue, and Gravel.

So based on the retained salary and the predicted Seattle expansion date, I think that's enough to say that both teams lost the deal, in a sense.

If the Seattle expansion takes place in 2021 or later, then LA wins the trade. Otherwise, it's a wash.
