Some GM would have given Toews more than Bowman if he hit the UFA market, especially a couple of years ago.... If he hit the market today GM's would be interested.

Toews is a unique player and you cant measure what he brings to the game and the team on and off the ice based on point totals alone.

There was no way Bowman was going to let Toews hit the free market.... Not only that but nickle and dimeing a player sends a terrible message to that player - especially when that player was the captain of 3 championship teams and brought you to the Western Conference finals 5 times... Toews is the epitome of success, and that success will be rewarded... You can bet many GM's wanted some of that success too, because Toews has proven he can win everywhere he played.

So it's not as simple as you make it out to be.

I mean, would you be upset if your GM paid a player 1.5 million too much for winning your team 3 cups and a decade of success and to avoid a bidding war?

If it matters I don't think Bowman would entertain the idea of trading Toews.... Toews is still the face of the franchise, he's a proven winner and a fan favorite and still very much an asset to this team on and off the ice.... The Hawks best chance of winning in the present and future is Toews. When Toews is on his game he is pretty much unstoppable... Toews only flaw is that he's not consistent, but when he's on his game he's unstoppable - he takes it to another level.

He’s overpaid and because of that the Blackhawks are struggling. Just say it as it is.
The inconsistent argument is also bogus. Consistency is part of being good. He is approaching bad contract.

The Hawks finished first in the Western Conference last season... So what, the Hawks have struggled this season but that will happen when you lose a signficiant portion of your team in Panarin, Hossa, Hjalmarsson, Kruger, Darling among others and replace them with rookies and role players.. The Hawks have iced 14 rookies this season.

The entire team has had a flat season, and I'm not going to blame Toews for this..

Toews inconsistency is the only reason why he's not the best player in the league, but that doesn't mean he's not a great player... If Toews was consistent he would be up there with McDavid, because when Toews is on his game and is playing to all of his abilities he is a McDavid type player but unfortunately that type of play comes and goes... I will say tho that in clutch moments you usually get that elite player, so when the game is on the line you want Toews on the ice.

Either way Toews resume has 10.5 per written all over it, and it would be kind of difficult to haggle with a resume like that - and the face of your franchise - when it comes to negotiations. You could bet that GM's would have been drooling if Toews hit the UFA market and there is no doubt in my mind he would have had numerous offers and would have signed for at least 11-12 elsewhere....... Also, do you have any idea how unpopular it would be here in Chicago if Bowman haggled with Toews and he signed elsewhere and the Hawks got nothing? you don't want to know........ Bill Wirtz was hated because he drove Roenick, Belfour and Chelios out of town - Bowman letting Toews get away would show the fans nothing has changed... Also players would think twice before they signed here knowing that the franchise wouldn't reward even their best players that brought cups to the city.

Like I said it's not as simple as you make it out to be.

10.5 is not that bad - his contract is front-loaded too. Also 2-3 years down the line 10.5 will look tame compared to the 13 Tavares will get and the 13+ Matthews will get.

So you'd go to Toews, ask him to waive his NMC and he says yes, just like that? Doesn't Crawford have one too? That matters because players don't have to agree to it. Joe Thornton refused to a few years back, and San Jose even resigned him last summer.

I know he played on the Olympic teams and has been an All-star, but I think Duchene is over-rated. He's very good but I keep seeing & thinking he's a 2nd line Center. And he might be on a bad team, but they sure didn't get better with him. He hasn't been anywhere near a point per game player for a few seasons now. If one think Toews contract is bad, what is one going to pay Duchene after next season after his age 28 season? He makes $6M per now.

I'm also surprised one wants to trade Crawford. At $6M per his contract is actually pretty good. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the Blackhawks went from fringe playoff contenders to bottom of the Central when he went down with an injury. So they should make the knee jerk reaction and trade him for Darling with his .894 save% and a 2nd & 3rd rd pick? I bet Carolina would even be willing to throw in Kruger as well if one wanted to make the deal even worse for the Blackhawks.
