Carlson

Created by: Eli
Team: 2017-18 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2018
Published: Feb. 15, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
McPhee drafted him, knows him, trusts him, has the cap space to re-sign him, and has his defensive partner from last year's playoffs playing 23 minutes a night on the right side, even though he's left handed, due to a shortage of right defensemen. Adding Carlson to play 25 minutes a night fixes the one big hole in Vegas' roster, at a cost of one of its surplus left defensemen, and a few prospects and picks. Washington then rents a right defenseman--maybe Schenn or Demers, at a cost of late picks and weak prospects (Bowey stays) and carries on with lots of cap space and a reduced workload for greybeard Brooks Orpik. Or they go all out and trade for a 1RD like Ristolainen, to replace Carlson right away, at a lower cost and lower future cap hit. The Caps are fine. Vegas are unstoppable, but the Caps have so little shot of getting to the finals this year anway, as well as Pittsburgh and Tampa are playing.... that even with Ovechkin having a great year, they focus on staying in the picture over the next few seasons in spite of Carlson's contract demands.

Capitals definitely say yes to that. That's quite the over-payment.

Really, if I'm MacLellan, I ask for Theodore, Subban, and Tuch, and then bargain down to Theodore, a first (or a recent first, since they took three forwards last year, and the Caps haven't taken a forward in the first round since Vrana), and Hyka.

Of the top fifty offensive defensemen in points, the other right handed ones whose teams might happily part with them: Leddy, Petry,Ristolainen, and maybe Shattenkirk.... they just aren't close to Carlson at either offense or ddefense this year. If Vegas wants to add a right handed defenseman, they don't have to pay this much, but the only reason they wouldn't win a bidding war is if McPhee and MacLellan have a rivalry going on.

Karlsson and Green have had years when they're better at offense, but this year they aren't there, and theyr'e both terrible at defense. Carlson has three times as many even strength points as Mike Green, doesn't play sheltered shifts, and is better at power plays, too.

If the Caps enter the market to sell Vegas a defenseman, they have a monopoly.

But if I'm McPhee I offer what I said above, and wait for MacLellan to accept, and then pick up Leddy anyway, because I've got cap space for both, and maybe MacLellan comes down when he reads about Leddy in the papers. Plus then I can throw in Miller and not care.
