Description
Penguins can't land the big 3C in Brassard, but pull off upgraded top 6 wing depth. Oduya and Vermette are solid vet depth pickups. Both have good amount of playoff experience.

The Hunwick $$$ is the issue for ottawa. We have some young guys who are on ELC's who can play those minutes. I like the dea add but unfortunately money is an issue for us.

Why is Ottawa adding on salary? Makes no sense from their prospective.

Way too much for a rental in Kane. Try more like a 1st, Gustavsson, Hunwick.

Actually, we don't even need retention on Vermette as you can see with my moves there is plenty left in cap space. Questionable if he can get a 2nd. He's a bottom line center, has some ability to play 3C. That's more 3rd round pick material.

Oduya is UFA. So is Chris Wideman. Ottawa takes on salary by replacing one of their UFA defenseman with Hunwick. His cap hit is still reasonable, but I threw in bottom 6 NHL ready prospect as well.

You also have to consider Penguins are asking to add salary on Kane. Teams don't retain salary for free. The team is also overloaded with wingers if you don't ship out Sheary in the deal. I stand by that deal, all of them really, and would likely just modify the Vermette deal to forget the 5th and the salary retention, as it isn't needed.

Fair enough. Good feedback. Penguins could always try and deal Hunwick for a pick to someone else and then flip the pick, likely a 3rd or a 4th and a prospect, for Oduya.

You’re seriously saying we should trade Sheary++ for a UFA Kane? I like Kane and would trade for him, but the difference between Sheary and Kane isn’t Gustavsson and a 1st PLUS the fact that Sheary is signed cheap for two extra years while Kane is a UFA.

Last year was a different year. Weaker draft and less centers on the market. Vermette is also constantly getting healthy scratches.

I think Vermette would be a solid addition. He is a good faceoffs center that can chip in offensively. Idk why Anaheim didn’t just trade him when Kesler came back if they were going to do him like this. His value was probably at his highest point in recent history getting top 6 minutes.
