Tanev AND Glendening: Boldly Bolster Buds

Created by: Liamthepro
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2018
Published: Feb. 18, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yes a 2nd for Glendening. Please remember the Leafs got a 4th for Sosh. Still think it is just crazy to give up that super valuable pick? Also stop worrying about a 4C with a 1.8M cap hit. Luke is not old, and could be traded again later for value, as a faceoff winning 4C.
The Tanev deal is a big building block for Vancouver, and all of those assets will find better use there obviously.
I know, all three guys can probably make Van's roster before the year is done (Rosen in the absence of Tanev, and likely Gudbranson will also be dealt). And they have NHL futures, even on a real NHL team far better than these Canucks. But this is paying a real price. The Leafs have strong drafts to trade from, and all the pieces needed to be bold.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Tanev, Christopher
Additional Details:
Overpaying for Tanev, but he is what the Leafs need. It would be very hard to include Pickard and a 1st. However, Tanev for the next three playoff runs could result in glory. That is a bigger deal than the overpay.
VAN
2.
TOR
  1. Glendening, Luke ($300,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Hoping to appease Wings fans who need to see a 2018 2nd for Glendening. He is worth it to the Leafs if DET retains a bit of salary. They have Green coming off the books, and other salaries should be traded for a brighter future, so they can afford a small retention, in order to get cheaper and pick 6 times in the first three rounds.
This way LG is only a 1.5M cap hit in the next three years, which is more palatable, but not make or break.
Maybe DET sends back a 2020 7th if they don't retain at all.
DET
  1. Rychel, Kerby
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Rychel has no future with Leafs and probably in the NHL at all.

Trading your platoon AHL goalie, your 14th forward that can't crack the lineup at age 24, an AHL depth defensemen and a late first for Tanev is not overpaying. Its underpaying

Pickard is an NHL calibre goalie. When he was with the Avs, he was the starter but it wasn't his fault they were losing they were just BAD! Lol
Leivo is a PP specialist that sure isn't in the lineup but that's because Babcock is stubborn has nothing to do with Leivo.
Rosen is unknown to me. He looked good when he was playing but had a couple brainfarts. He's played better on the Marlies.
The 1st won't be past 20th which is late 1st. Leafs are not contenders yet, Leafs are only in this position cause the Atlantic (beyond Lightning) is just SHOCKINGLY bad.

I don't see the intrigue with Tanev. He's not a make or break cup contending D man. If the Leafs get him it doesn't make them cup contenders.

Although i somewhat agree with you. The trade is still decent. A 1st is a 1st. Pickard has found some success at the NHL level already so what does it matter if he does bad on an AHL team, their AHL team could just be bad defensively and judging how their team needs someone like tanev, thats probably the case. But yes pickard and the 1st is whats enticing for the canucks here.

He started when Varmalov was hurt. He was traded for an AHL depth player and a 6th round pick 4 months ago.

Do you watch hockey? This guy... Doesnt see the intrigue with tanev. Oh my. Well let me tell you my friend. He can play on both special units. Thats powerplay and penalty kill for people who dont watch hockey. He is also one of the best defensive defenseman in the league. Hes got a great shot. He even trained with stamkos' shot trainer one year too.

although I agree with littlejerry assessment of the leafs in the trade, I also agree with DJSums. Tanev isn't really needed by the Leafs for the price of # 1 pick.

Goalies get the worst return out of any other position. And players with little to no NHL experience get less return compared ones with experience. So because pickard is a goalie with little experience, hes not going to get you much at all. It doesnt mean hes bad. Hes found success in every league hes played, including the NHL which is most important. He was the top rated goalie in his draft too.

thats fair. i was simply responding to the notion that a collection of random AHL players gets you Tanev.

That was also before he became one of the best AHL goalies in the league. He's got value now.
He's got like 10 games under his belt. When he plays he's a good player. Big body and can play the front of the net on PP.

I watch hockey but admittedly not much of Canucks. I've never heard anything about Tanev other then the Canucks want to trade him? But sure that's fine.

Ok where to begin. The Toronto Marlies are likely to set a new record for points in a season, as they stampede through the AHL.
Having Sparks and Pickard, two NHL level goaltenders, has been a huge part of that, as both have been incredible. Pickard has 17 wins in 22 games, a .931 save percentage, and 1.86 GAA! They are both top 3 AHL goalies.
GMs in the league know that. And they know that McIlhenny has been a dynamite backup this season, who is signed cheap next year. The Leafs must be getting calls about Pickard, look at those numbers!
Also it is clear that you guys don't know Leivo and Rosen, but both help the Canucks. Van's own goalie says they ice sorry excuses for NHL players. Leivo and Rosen help Canucks get cheaper next year, and are easily ready to get good in low pressure VanCity minutes.

That's what I mean. Leafs don't want just any RHD they need one that fits their team. Also why would Leafs trade a 1st round pick, especially if a 15-20 overall pick when they aren't gunning for a cup this year???

I don't know all of that, but I do know that the Leafs are incredibly weak at RHD. They realistically have 4 different guys playing the right side who should all be bottom pairing.
Tanev is elite in his own end, which the Leafs sorely need. He is simply much better than: Hainsey, Zaitsev, Carrick, and Polak. This makes Tanev the Leafs #1 RHD, and worth more to them than perhaps some other teams.

Detroit has no use for Kirby Rychel we will just take your 2018 2nd round pick for Luke Glendening with no retention.

They don't need to become cup contenders this year through trades either. Very unlikely to happen, and trading your future for this year would be dumb like Bergevin.
But this way, for three seasons, they get the elite defensive RHD that they dream of having. Doesn't hurt that he intimidates. They are much better with Hainsey farther down the depth chart. And the team grows into a bona fide powerhouse pretty quickly.
The funny thing about this year is that both Boston and Tampa are beatable. What if you get past them in six or seven tight games? Then you are cup contenders this year.
That is a lot more likely with defensive stalwarts Tanev and Glendening.

That would be fine too. Rychel is included so TML don't creep closer to 50 contracts, it is the kind of thing LouLam would insist on. The 300k retained is not a sticking point.

Good call sums. I would include Carrick, Neilsen and a 2nd.
Canucks need young D and Toronto do not, aside from Liljegren, Dermott, Borgman.

Hainsey IS a lefty, and like Hunwick before him, is playing his wrong side. Because the Leafs are so glaringly lacking a top four RHD!

P.S. Polak is good? If you think so please have him on PITT!
Don't actually though, because I like the Pens.
