Flames TDL (Assuming Smith is out long-term)

Created by: Jerry
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2018
Published: Feb. 20, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming that Smith is out longer than expected, the Flames trade for Johnson, who is a guy they know is a good backup and can win some hockey games. The idea of a Rittich/Gillies tandem for the foreseeable frightens me if the Flames want to push for the playoffs.

Desharnais is added at the TDL for depth at center. Stajan has played fine but I feel there needs to be an upgrade at the 4th line center position.

Brodie and Hamonic have been playing awful. Brodie has shown in the past that he plays well with Stone. Dropping Hamonic to play with Kulak is not really a demotion as Kulak has been pretty good. If the pairings are like this, both should play around the same amount of minutes, while Giordano/Hamilton play the bulk of the game:
Giordano/Hamilton ~24min
Brodie/Stone ~18min
Kulak/Hamonic ~18min

Honestly aside from the FLA game Rittich has been lights out and I feel pretty safe with him being in there even if smith is out longer. Even Hamonic has been really good lately, brodie admittedly has been awful. The main problem with this team is their play at home, they **** the bed against FLA and didn't show up for 40 min against Boston. With the way Anaheim and San Jose are trending, as well as LA now getting some wins, I don't see this team making the playoffs anymore. They've dug themselves a hole cuz of their atrocious play at the dome, and for this roster to not make the playoffs is appalling. Gotta think if that happens, GG is out.

I agree, Rittich has been outstanding. I just feel Treliving needs to add an experienced NHL goalie for depth if Smith is out for the long haul. Can't count on Rittich to play every game for the rest of the season (I don't trust Gillies as a backup).

They play flat every home game, which makes zero sense to me. What I hated most about the FLA game was that when Hamilton scored his hat trick goal to make it 6-3, he was all smiles. That made me furious and I think the players, aside from Tkachuk, Gio, and Smith, do not hate to lose. The only way they are going to make the playoffs is to start winning at home, and they need to win all the divisional match-ups against the Ducks and Kings.

If they don't make it, I do NOT think GG will get fired. Aside from some power play personnel decisions (i.e. The Brouwer Play), IMO he is a good coach. A coach can only do so much and I believe the blame should weigh heavy on the players' shoulders. He may get fired if they start next season like the Oilers did this year.
