Capitals want defense. Offer defensive prospects and a change of leadership.

Created by: Eli
Team: 2017-18 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2018
Published: Feb. 23, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Caps give up good prospect on each side of the blueline and a different leader who couldn't possibly lead the group to be worse than it is this year under Hjalmarsson's leadership, when OEL has the worst plus/minus in the league. Maybe Orpik's only won one Stanley Cup, but the Caps' defense has helped them win the last two President's trophies, and the last three first rounds in the playoffs. Since Phoenix has guys in place who can play Hjalmarsson's minutes, and Scenn might not be re-signed this summer, getting two prospects and a pick, and a different mentor for Arizona's blueline could help them get to the playoffs next year, even if Hjalmarsson didn't get there this year. What's in it for the Caps? They have no cap space and want to add a right defenseman. Schenn isn't as tough as orpik, but he's close. Hjalmarsson plays similar minutes on the left, so this makes the Caps' defense more complete, after the loss of three guys last summer.

You call yourself a Caps fan? You're acknowledging that this deal helps the Caps. You're telling Arizona fans not to support it. Never mind that you're wrong. Leave aside that Orpik and Hjalmarsson play the same role, and you yourself acknowledge Hobbs is a good defensive prospect. What is your personal purpose in posting this troll comment?

Remember the time the Caps traded for Adam Foote? Orpik today is as good as Foote was then. Hjalmarsson is a hair better, but he was brought in for leadership and OEL is currently the worst defesive player in the NHL, so he has failed. His contract goes through next year and costs a million less than Orpiks, so the Caps take on a million dollar player who Arizona probably isn't keeping.

OEL is not remotely close to the worst defensive player in the nhl. What is wrong with you?

Not in any personal, binding, unchanging sense. But in terms of his plus minus this year, playing with and practicing with Hjalmarsson, with his three Cup rings and aura of wisdom.

By plus minus, this year so far, Oliver Ekman-Larsson is having the worst net season of anyone in the NHL, at -37. That's four worse than Nick Leddy, and eight worse than Erik Karlsson. Caps fans on here will respond that that's because these guys have bad teammates, and then they'll go and try to trade a king's ransom for each of those teammates.

The best fit for the Caps at this trade deadline, in terms of performance, versatility, and cap hit, was Michael Grabner. he just went for a 2nd pick and a former 5th round pick who doesn't play hockey in North America.

Hjalmarsson might in some ways turn out to be an upgrade on Orpik. This year Hjalmarsson has three fewer points than Orpik, a better plus/minus by two, o.6% fewer defensive zone starts, plays almost a minute more per game.... two fewer giveaways, 8 more takeaways, but Orpik has 159 more hits.

This just in from the Toronto Star: teams that hit more tend to win more hockey games (https://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2014/03/27/department_of_hockey_analytics_more_hits_equals_more_wins.html). Anecdotally, this is especially true in the playoffs.

So, no, I don't think the Caps need to upgrade from Orpik to Hjalmarsson. I think it's a downgrade they accept for salary cap reasons, and for age, and because it's the only way they have cap space to rent Schenn to stick ahead of Bowey for the playoffs, because Schenn has 112 more hits than Bowey, so it almost evens out, and Schenn plays an average of one more minute than Bowey, and has more experience (but next year the Caps are going with Bowey, beause assuming he gets into better shape over the summer, he's going to be a better defenseman than anyone mentioned in this thread. Hjalmarsson and Schenn, together, represent a slight upgrade over Orpik. Hjalmarsson alone doesn't.

See above, and see the plus/minus rankings: http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=plusMinus

Arizona traded a lot for Hjalmarsson, presumably because they thought he could teach their existing defensemen how to play better defense. It hasn't happened and they owe him over four million dollars next year.

Hjalmarsson is like a younger Orpik who, in spite of being younger, isn't any better, and doesn't hit anybody. Orpik has 170 hits. That's just over three a game. To count, in the rulebook, they have to lead to a change in possession. The difference in giveaways and takeaways says that, other than hits, Hjalmarsson gets the puck for his team one more time every ten games than Orpik (or loses it one less time, really). But then you add in hits, and Orpik gets the puck back one more time each period. He is superior hockey player. But each has failed to lead their club to where they want to be and could use a change of scenery. I'm not trading Orpik for Hjalmarsson without getting back Schenn, and I'm not including any pick above a 4th or any prospect above Siegenthaler.

I've watched Hjalmarsson and he's been an excellent addition. The fact that he was injured (along with Raanta) at the start of the year is what sunk the Coyotes' season. His pairing with Chychrun has really elevated Jakob's game, which is in the Yotes' long term best interest.

The proposed Orpik trade doesn't address the Coyotes needs at all. Tell me where you would slot Orpik, Hobbs and Siegenthaller in this list of AZ D-men that will play pro next year:

1) OEL
2) Hjalmarsson
3) Goligoski
4) Chychrun
5) Demers
6) XXX - '18 1st
7) PO Joseph
8) Capobianco
9) Wood
10) Dineen
11) Mermis
12) Mayo
13) Smereck

I have previously proposed a draft day trade of Orpik + WSH '18 1st (~pick 25-31) for '18 MIN 2nd (~pick #50) + Bolland's contract ($1.25M uninsured, can be placed on LTIR for cap ceiling team). That saves Washington around $1.75M in real cash in comparison to buying out Orpik and it only costs dropping 25 picks or so.
