Not saying the Habs robbed the Leafs, but the Habs robbed the leafs

Montreal :
Gets a 2nd (to go with the 3 other ones),
Kerby Rychel who at worst is an Elite AHL player who can really help our disastrous team in the AHL
Rinat Valiev (Top 4 guy in the AHL who could potientially become a decent bottom pairing defender in the NHL

Toronto
Tomas Plekenec A good 3rd line center, but with the Leafs will play 4th line and top PK minutes
Kyle Baun A bottom 6 AHL guy who probably wont even make the marlies considering how good they are

Ah... The end of an era. Oh well, I'm happy that we got something for him unlike Koivu. I'm kinda surprised we traded with the leafs.

Let's go tanking!

I honestly wouldnt be surprised if we got him back in FA considering how **** we are on center. I dont even know our center depth chart anymore (Legit Centers)

Danault
Shaw (I dont even think hes a natural center)
Shaw
Froese
Mccarron

Isnt Andrew Shaw our best % in the dot though? I know we are god awful, Im just hoping Evans is decent at winning draws. Poehling is staying in University for another year. I dont think we really have anybody who can step in

Wow, a better return than I expected, Bergevin deserves credit on this one. Many people assumed we'd get a 2nd for Pleks so its right on the money. As others pointed out, even if Rychel and Valiev only amount to being fringe NHLers, Montreal really needs help throughout their system, including being more competitive at the AHL level so our prospects don't develop in a constant losing environment. So win for that as well.

Bob Mckenzie reported 2 or 3 days ago that Plekenec would only fetch a 4th so im not complaining lol

I thought he played mostly wing this year. Am I wrong? (But Logan is exclusively a RW nowadays.)

Havent watched much Habs hockey recently cause habs hockey makes me depressed. But when I did watch, Andrew was always Center and Logan was rotating betweein RW/C

I love this deal. I love this deal so much.

Pleky is a really underrated player. It'll be great to have him come back in July. Have no doubts he will. But this is the move that MB had to make. I've been saying for a month or more, not trading Plekanec would have been a failure of management given his value and the fact that he's on an expiring contract. Everybody wants him to come back and get his thousand games in Montreal. That'll happen, and, we got a good draft pick and two good depth players. I'm going to call it a fair trade right now, because the Leafs also get something that they really need, but, this is definitely leaning on Montreal side as far as winning the trade.

I dont know, I feel like their strongest Position is at Center. It wouldve been more beneficiary that they used those assets to get a top 4 defensemen opposed to overpaying for somebody who is only going to be on their 4th line

I don't disagree, I just think they're going to use JvR as that chip to cash in for a Top 4. As far as where Pleky plays, I mean, I think maybe Toronto is reacting to Boston getting Nash, grabbing a guy in Pleky who knows Boston well, plays their stars well, and matchup dependant, could see more ice time than Bozak in tight Playoff games. Of course I'm only speculating. I'm just appreciating this deal for Montreal.

So Rychel and Valiev don’t really have much of a future. Bu I don’t understand why Toronto did this. We needed a defenseman not another forward. This might mean Bozak or JVR get traded.

In all fairness, even if MTL got a lot more than what was expected, TOR is making a solid move for the playoffs that’s designed to go up against teams like BOS and TBL. Plekanec has spent most of his career matching up against both those teams best players. Babcock is going to have the edge in the matchups game with having an option of Plecky on his 4th line, and moving him above guys like Bozak when the need to defend a lead.

Leafs now have great centre depth. Toronto is notorious for blowing leads, and Plekanec is a experienced and responsible forward that can take heavy minutes come playoff time, he can provide much needed stability to a young forward group.

Right now I say Montreal won this trade by just a little.

Plekanec’s and the Leafs performance in the playoffs will determine which direction this trade can slide when you’re dealing with a short term rental
