I know Stastny (even guys like Brassard) is a rental and it’s a different situation between WIN and the Habs, but find this quote from Bergefail even more hilarious now:

“Top centerman are not available in trades” - Marc Bergevin

It is. There was some talk about lottery protection with picks that I didn't really follow, so that may be part of the condition on that pick.

Are we characterizing Paul Stastny as a "top centerman" now? Hasn't played a full season since 11/12. Good player, don't get me wrong.

STL Blues right now: "aaaaaaaand I'm freeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Free fallin..................Free fallin and I'm free fallin and I'm.......".

Man considering they were a contender half way through the year, this is nuts.

He would be the top centerman on Montreal, and why would we trade a 1st + for a rental when we can just sign him in FA?

I wonder if it has something to do with Yeo's coaching. This happened more than once to him in Minnesota.

Well that was his role in STL and in COL.... he’s by no means a franchise #1 C, but to say he’s not a top C..... jeez he’d be the best Center since Koivu for MTL.

The price WIN paid for him is fair imo. My first comment is just a jab a Bergefail about how he loves to say Centers are never available, but we see guys like Stastny and Brassard move in the span of a couple days lol

The trade is fair as far as value, but I think the Jets won this deal... Stastny is a good add for the Jets - if the Jets can make it to the WCF it will be a win for them..

I just watched a couple of Jets documentaries recently (like 2 days ago) and it's clear the Jets fanbase is hungry for some sort of playoff success, and if this trade can get them a deep playoff run then it was worth it..

Good deal for WPG who already has many young players + prospects. This pushes their chances way up. I doubt they get past NSH, but this helps.

Would you have traded your 2018 or even 2019 1st for Stastny?

If MTL were in the same position as WIN, absolutely.

Right now if Bergefail wasn’t looking to rebuild, and seeing the WIN 1st and MTL 2nd is roughly 5-10 spots difference, I’d could of seen MTL offer two 2nd’s and a prospect for Stastny.

I think this is a great move by STL. If you're not winning the cup...then trading Stastny for a 1st round pick is great. This takes balls and patience. STL is not being short sighted here!

conditions of this trade:

If Winnipeg's pick is Nos. 1-3, which it won't be, Blues will receive Jets' first-rounder in 2019. Otherwise, they will get it this year.

If Blues don't re-sign Foley before Aug. 16, 2019, then they receive Jets' 4th rounder in 2020.

So Blues get Foley or the 4th...not both.

Great addition for Winnipeg! That gives them plenty if scoring depth and a guy who can play the PK and power play.

It's top 3 protected. Which means Win would have to pull a Blues in order for that to happen

Yeo is a terrible coach, but Armstrong did this to himself. Steen, Berglund got contract extensions instead of a guy like Backes. Steen is an okay player, but the fact they wouldn't give Backes that type of contract but gave it to Steen instead is insane. Berglund got 5 years and a NMC for what? Not even 30 points? Allen was given a starter's contract before he proved himself to be a true number 1. Lots of hits with Armstrong (Schenn, Tarasenko and Schwartz contract) but he's had just as many if not more misses
