Stone: OTT thoughts please

Created by: Tkachinla

Initial Creation Date: Mar. 3, 2018

Description
It would appear this deal structure for Mark Stone, given OTT's direction, is getting more acceptance on the site. I've seen a few with Andersson instead of Kylington. I think CGY would consider either to get Stone.

Asking for OTT opinions -- does this make some sense to get a bit younger and get decent value back for Stone?

---------------------

Included some of the depth players on the roster to show that the deal should be acceptable for the big club in CGY.

---------------------

Brouwer trade isn't necessary (cap wise), but would free up some roster opportunity for young players. Roster below includes about 8 extra skaters, totalling around $6.0M of excess salary.

That's not enough to get stone imo. I think we would need to give Bennett, 2019 1st and rasmus

Mark Stone is pretty untouchable as far as Ottawa is concerned, Doubt that is nearly enough.

Have to think that if Erik Karlsson is an uncertainty, then any player on that OTT team is an uncertainty. And, if you listen to some of the player interviews leading up to (and after) the trade deadline, Stone definitely sounds uncertain about his future with OTT.

What would CGY need to add to make it happen? What about [Bennett + Fox (rights) + Gillies + 2nd round pick] ? That is an upgrade on the D prospect, plus a solid pick upgrade.

Yeah i guess it all depends on what Ownership Eugene Melnyk does, It sounds like as of now Stone is untouchable but i understand that things are subject to change in Ottawa, Not really sure what the ask would be with Stone but this looks pretty spot on. Might be somewhat closer for him.

I'd say he's pretty untouchable. He's really good. Pretty good value though. I just wouldn't trade him but who knows with our ownership.

He's better than "really good"...One of the better young two-way possession players out there, hence my undying interest in seeing him come to CGY. OTT is well aware of this, to be sure, but if Melnyk decides to move on from Karlsson...who knows what could happen.

Why re-sign Stewart? He was a waiver claim with little more purpose than filling in with Ferland out.

Whether or not anyone is untouchable, that's not enough for Stone. Sens best forward and one of the best 2 way forwards in the game. He doesn't really get a lot of attention but getting some selke votes last year was nice.
None of those players have a pedigree to convince a trade Imo. Personally there are few packages I would trade Stone for.

I totally understand your view on Stone’s talent and playing style. But, if Melnyk sends down notice to Dorion that Karlsson isn’t coming back, OTT is fully in rebuild mode at that point, no question.

And, if that’s the plan, then why keep a 25 year old Stone for 3-4 years of rebuild hockey when the team could get a range of younger assets that might have a lottery ticket attached somewhere within the package?

I think the deal is more interesting to Dorion than OTT fans might think, but **only if Karlsson moves on**.
