Hockey trades to set up next season

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2018-19 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 3, 2018
Published: Mar. 3, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
AZ trade: Both Domi and Nelson have been rumored to be available. Each could use a fresh start. Domi is a more natural winger and could replace Ladd (see next trade) on a dynamic line with Ho-Sang and Bellows. AZ gets a more traditional center who has improved mightily in the faceoff circle.

STL trade: Allen has had a down year, but he's still better than what the Isles have had over the last 2 years. Carter Hutton has looked like the #1 in STL this year and is a UFA. They might be inclined to keep him around. Ladd (with $2M retention) isn't a bad bang for his buck at that cost and provides experience. Isles throw in a 2nd as a sweetener.

I've seen some posts on here trying to run Allen out of town. Tried something creative

It's still going to take more than that. Hutton hasn't been able to play as a starter like Allen has, and Allen has been playing lights-out this year.

      I must have!

To be fair though Allen was playing well before the Blues declined. I still think Allen is worth more than a 2nd and a (arguably) cap dump.

Well, any trade involving Ladd has the potential to be called ridiculous. It's a hilariously bad contract for NYI, but Ladd as a skater still holds value. The questions are always going to be "how much is NYI willing to retain", "how badly does the other team want a veteran two way forward" and "how far can that other team twist NYI's arm in light of the knowledge that NYI is desperate to unload this contract". That doesn't even consider whether or not Ladd wants to be traded. All of these variables make it hard to get a fix on what Ladd's value is/what he'd go for.

But I think if NYI is willing to retain 2 million, that makes Ladd a decent middle six defensive forward with a cap hit of 3.5 million. That's not worth a lot, but it's definitely worth something. I'd say if STL felt Ladd and a 2nd isn't good enough, why not throw in Dal Colle? Personally, I think Dal Colle still has potential, but he's doomed to languish as a prospect as long as he's an Islander. Bridgeport is where young talent goes to die.
