But the thing is this happened at the draft so the leafs would have known the teams he wouldn't except a trade to before heading into the day.

True enough but I’m hesitatant to think that anybody would accept a trade there

The Isles finished just one point out of the playoffs, so I don't think JVR would be reluctant going to the isles and possibly playing with Tavares in his upcoming UFAS season.
I wonder what the real offer was by the Leafs (if there one). We really don't know. Certainly looks like overpayment by the Flames, especially if they miss the playoffs

It wasn't that JVR wouldn't waive (I don't think he even has a clause), it's that he wouldn't commit to signing an extension. By all accounts, that's a fair trade. Now, there's no way to know if it would have changed the outcome of the Isles season - I personally doubt it, but it would have made our offense that much better.

Odds are he wanted to wait til Tavares signed seeing Brazel at the time was uncertain how he would adjust to pro hockey so seeing JVR would show a commitment to win Tavares would have signed his 10 per year contract and at that point JVR would have signed his 6 per year. So yes its possible that is why but it also is possibly why Tavares is apprehensive to sign long term.

Was a 1st round pick and JVR. Not a second. Just an FYI.

Well that's even more puzzling seeing they really would have gotten so much more in value from the leafs

Specially with Liljegren on the board.
Would have ended up being JVR+Liljegren for Hamonic.
Then again, I guess this is why the Leafs never pulled the trigger.
