Tavares to Nashville - kinda saves us.

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2018-19 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2018
Published: Mar. 6, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Before anyone goes "they can just wait to sign him in the offseason" - no they cannot. Even if you assume the cap will go to $80M next season (which is reasonable, but still kind of high) NSH only has $13M worth of space. They would, at the least, need to sign: Ryan Hartman, Juuse Saros, Miikka Salomaki and arguably Alexei Emelin.

That doesn't even factor in their other, less valuable FAs or guys from other teams they just may want to pursue. By trading Johansen for Tavares (with an extension), NSH only increases their cap by $2-3M depending on the deal JT is willing to take. This is an instant improvement to Nashville's lineup and puts them all that much closer to a Stanley Cup. Tavares would absolutely want to play there as they would be the most competitive team he has been a part of.

Lastly, this trade is at least tolerable for Islanders fans. While Johansen is a downgrade from JT he is still pretty good and locked up long term. None of this is an ideal solution. In a perfect world Garth would've been fired like 3 years ago and someone with a pedigree would have stepped in. Johnny would have probably been signed since last July 1.

Interesting, NSH could use a left handed center. However, this puts them in a cap crunch when they need to resign Ellis the following season.

They don't need Emelin, the other guys will hardly cost over 3m. Saaros will probably sign short and cheap to take over after Rinnes contract is up in a year (7m space to give him a lot of money if he proves to be a #1). They are still allowed to go over the cap by some %age in the summer - they could simply sign Tavares and trade Bonino, whom would then be of minimal use, afterwards

Tavares isn't resigning just so they can trade him. if Nashville wants him they'll move salary some other way. plus taking on that Johansen contract would be a terrible idea for NY

Couldn't NSH just trade Johansen to someone like MTL for a ton of assets and then sign JT for free if he hits FA? NYI has no leverage in the situation; they might get a little something for JT's rights, but not a sign-and-trade for a younger 1C.

He's being signed because NYI can "offer" him the 8th year where NSH could only give 7 if he hit the market. That's the entire point...

This is a totally valid point - but it comes with a risk. Here, JT is a guarantee. Whereas if he hits the market he could obviously speak with any team. What if San Jose makes a great pitch? Winnipeg? Or...Vegas? Then NSH's road to get out of the west gets a whole lot harder.

so your point is you want the Islanders to take on a terrible contract to do Tavares the favour of not having to play for them and get an extra year on his contract? ok then...

What makes you think the Islander would be able to sign him in the first place?? They definitely would’ve made him there best possible offer by this point and the fact that he hasn’t yet signed means he probably wants to see what’s out there, similar to what Stamkos did. And if he doesn’t sign with you in free agency, he’s not going to waive the NTC/NMC he’ll definitely get. Tavares has all power rn you need to convince him not the islanders.

I don't see Johansen's contract as "terrible" but ok.

Buddy. The point here is to sign him (in order for JT to get 8 years) versus the 7 he could get elsewhere, then deal him. Just because he waives a NMC to NSH doesn't mean he gives it up for his whole contract. This is meant to be a doomsday post. Of course I want to keep him. It would be crazy not to...

Why wouldn't Nashville trade Johansen or Turris to someone for picks/prospects instead of giving them away for free? Doesn't make any sense.

paying a guy nearly a million bucks per goal seems pretty terrible to me.

and that really seems like a loophole in the free agency rules that the league would quickly look to shut down if someone actually did it.

I could be wrong on this, but my understanding on these clauses is once they're waived, they're waived. guys can't just pick and choose to waive it when they decide it suits them.

Thats why people don't like this, the 8th year of the contract isn't worth trading Johansen.

This has nothing to do with whether it disappears once you waive it. I’m saying he’s not going to waive it unless he wants to go there. And if he wanted to go there he’ll go there in free agency. (An 8th year doesn’t hold the weight some ppl seem to think it does)

I kinda think the Preds can make a better deal straight for Johansen. A team like Carolina might want want him at centre. From the Isles view, maybe they don't want the trade. Maybe they figure they could spend 8m better than Johansen. For instance they might want Carlson as a UFA.
