So you don't think Habs fans would rather endure a few bad years and watch the kids develop in the big leagues rather than have the stop gaps of a few over-the-hill UFAs? I'd rather suck but be excited about the future than be middling.

I remember 1986, when the young kids came in for the last half of the season and won the cup on raw enthusiasm. That was my thinking of giving Thornton a big$$$ send off. If Poehling is ready before the end of the year, it means he could slot in or Big Joe could be moved to a contender. Same with Stastny. I suspect he'll get more than 2 years, but the idea is to go for more $$$$ and less term. Maybe you stretch to 3 years, but limit the NTC to 2 years.

But think how good he'd be on MacKinnon's wing!!! That was entirely why I thought Avs were a good home.

Just one year. Habs have cap coming out their ears, so why not?

Landeskog and Rantanen with Mack make up one of the most productive lines in all hockey. He isnt going to take Rants spot as the shooter, and he isnt going to take Landys spot as the two way winger to balance it out.
Hes a talented player but he wouldnt take any of MacKs current wingers spots...and if they are going to add a one dimensional winger for the 2nd line, easier to sign a guy like JVR vs sending 2 1st round picks to do so
