Younger and Smarter under a New Coach

Created by: netminder71

Description
Trotz doesn't survive this season. Though it was stupid to extend GM MacLellan I cannot control that. Time to really develop the younger talent and grow a new identity on this team.

Carlson "trade and sign" happens at 2018 draft, Caps get a future 1st rounder (when maybe Vegas isn't the 2nd-3rd best team in the league). A future 20-25 goal scorer on RFA deal, and McPhee gets his top pairing marquee defenseman that he drafted and knows well.

    Additional Details:
Even though Holtby sucks this season, he will bounce back and he's the Caps #1 until Samsonov is ready. Grubi has some good trade value at this year's draft and would be an affordable gateway for COL to wean off of Varly.

    Additional Details:
Pains me to trade big Willy, but he would flourish somewhere else. Caps need the picks to replenish the prospects pool up front. Trade would happen after re-signing to bridge deal and an attractive top-6 big body for the Kings.

Why would VGK give up that much if Carlson ultimately hits the market? They have the cash

Essentially a sign and trade, so Carlson does not hit the market that would drive his cost to over $8M into the range of likely Doughty, OEL, Karlsson deals upcoming. This way Vegas can afford a long-term top pairing defenseman and gives up a high pick and a player they will have trouble keeping anyway. The already extended Marchessault and Reilly Smith, they need to deal someone (most likely) in order to keep James Neal, Will Karlsson, Tomas Nosek, and they've got long term cap to Tatar and Eakin and in the out years would have to sign Lindberg and Haula. Someone (I think Tuch) is an odd-man out.

A 1st/3rd/good prospect to save ~$800-900k a season? I don't know man. Carlson is good but he's not that Doughty/OEL level that you mentioned. If it were that kind of impact player I'd do it.

Too much for Grubs (Maybe a 2nd and 4th) and not enough for Dumba (Kempny’s just a washed-up D Chicago decided to take away from the Czechs, and idk if trading Dumba for Barber and a 2nd would b good enough value.)

    Dude, you misspelled "Klingberg." http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&position=D&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=points,goals,assists

Carlson is second amond defensemen in points right now. Behind Klingberg. He has nine more points than Doughty and nineteen more than Ekman-Larsson.

Until he leads the Caps to a Cup, he's obviously not as valuable as Doughty. But OEL is Mr. Futility this year. Doesn't even belong in that conversation.
