Is A Parise Buyout Really A Bad Thing?

Created by: BoredWildFan
Team: 2018-19 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2018
Published: Mar. 8, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Moving forward, Parise is nothing more than a high-end third line grinder. With a lack of inexpensive, high-impact talent on the roster, his contract is now burdensome. Most Wild fans are hoping for an amnesty buyout in 2020, which may not be an option, and any injury that would force him into "retirement" on LTIR is less than ideal for a team that is usually tight against the cap limit.
If The Wild were to buyout Parise's contract this summer, the cap hit the next four seasons would be $253K, $253K, $1.253mil and $3.253mil, respectively. That's a lot of freed up cap space to add more productive players to play with the "young core" in their prime years. The window is wide open for the next four years.
The pain arrives in 2022-23. Parise's cap hit rises to $7.253mil, $8.253mil and $8.253mil, respectively, for the next three seasons. Coupled with the "young core" entering their 30s, it's the right time to sell, tank and rebuild.
In 2025-26 the Wild have re-stocked and are ready to compete. Parise is still on the books for another seven years, but at $1.7mil his cap hit should account for less than 2% of the payroll.
I'm sure the last thing Wild owner Craig Leipold wants to do is pay Parise $24mil to not play, but if he wants to win a Cup there may not be a better option.

The length of that tho! It just feels like money thrown away forever! Why not just stick it out until its nothing but a pain in the butt because right now he can still play.

can you even buy him out? he has a full NMC wich means you can't put him on waivers in order to buy him out.

If you bought him out, would he become a free agent?

252,748 is that how much cap you need to pay or is that the cap relief? bc if you buy him out and it only cost you 252,748/yr that would be awesome

Good question. I had to google the answer. This is from silersevensens.com
Waivers? What if they have a no-move clause?
A player with a no-move must be presented with the option to be put on unconditional waivers when being bought out, but the buy-out still goes forward if they say no. Players have 24 hours to decide when given this option.

That's his cap hit for the next two seasons. If you hit the long-term outlook tab on the roster you see the full impact.

The only "capfriendly" possibility is an eight year of LTIR, or hope for an upcoming (dis)honourable buyout.

Its very easy for one of us to simply buyout a player but to an owner that is literally a last ditch effort and not looked at lightly, especially big ones like Parse's contract. No business looks lightly at throwing money away for nothing. Parise although has slowed down significantly, brings intangible value to the organization.

Many companies would prefer an expensive asset that brings small returns (with the possibility that it gets better) than a medium expensive asset that brings no return at all.

I just think you wait for the inevitable career ending injury and LTIR him for many years.

No but why do you want 14 years of dead money on his contract, Doesn't make sense to buy out Parise with so many years left on his deal.
