Un-Chiarelli'd Oilers

Created by: Grievous
Team: 2018-19 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2018
Published: Mar. 17, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The attempt is to both build-up the prospects in the cupboard, shedding the handcuff contracts of Lucic & Russell, increasing team speed and ultimately NOT trading away the fantastic contracts of RNH and Klefbom for older, more expensive players on short-term deals.

Chia is famous for trading value away for pennies on the dollar and that needs to stop immediately, this will only happen if he is let go (or put on avery short leash). The obstacles are the ridiculous NMC and NTC contracts, so these players need to be convinced to move......

**NOTE: In this scenario the Oilers 1st round pick which would be 4-7th would be traded to NYR for their TB and Boston 1st Rounders. The Bos pick is then traded with Ryan Strome to Det for Anthanasiou and a 2nd.

I've endured the Gretzky trade, so anything is possible

It is disappointing to see what has happened to this once dominant and proud franchise.

With Chiarelli I expected the team to at least stay at the level it was when he took over and not get this much worse.

That being said I am not sure the players you have given contracts to would sign for what you are offering. I realize that Nash won't get the $8.2 MIL he was paid this year but I don't think it would drop down to $2.225 MIL. I think Chara will get near $4 MIL and Nurse will get between $4 and $4.5 MIL.

Anyway you have certainly have had to do some extreme trades and re-signings in a vacuum to try to fix this team. It really shows how hard it is going to be to fix it in real life.

The hope (Oilfan has been hanging on to this concept too tightly since 2010; longer if you were a fan during the unsettling Pocklington HOF sell-off years & near Houston relocation and then thru the frugal 2000's, where again the franchise couldn't afford its' stars) is that McDavid is a light to the "UFA moths" who want a shot a Stanley, but have already made the big bucks & want to play with this stellar talent.

It hasn't quite worked out as hoped, hopefully this changes.

wow, this takes the cake for RFA rights being dealt. people sure do love to deal the RFA's on here. realistically though how many of those deals actually happen? like since this system has been put in place probably fewer total than there are in this proposal...

The Nurse deal has to be a bridge deal, not unlike Trouba. Nurse still isn't what he will become, but he will never be an offensive Dman and his cap hit should reflect this. This year due to injured Klefbom and Sekera he has been playing 1st pairing minutes and he did okay. At this stage he needs to be paid less than Klefbom and preferrably less than 3 million. The Draisaitl contract debacle (it is $1.5 million too much) means this team has to be better at negotiating with their RFA's and cannot afford to sign bloated UFA contracts at the expense of good young value players.

Desperate times, require desperate measures. Plus who said anything about realistic? If Taylor Hall gets you Adam Larsson or Eberle gets you Ryan Strome, anything is possible. But carry on in your "realistic world" ?? Also, tomaytoe, tahmawtow, I could have signed the RFA's and then traded them but this gives the receiving team more options (where they can sign or trade, etc).

Edmonton hasn't been a dominant and proud franchise for decades. That can't be blamed on Chiarelli.

That was my point. It was a once dominant and proud franchise but even with the state it was in when he took over, I was expecting that Chiarelli would at least keep it status quo but he has made Edmonton decidedly worse.
