When that pick was made, the Oilers had both Lucic and Maroon. Tkachuk wasn't on their radar. PLD or Sergachev were in the Oilers sights until Puljujarvi dropped, and there was talk of trading the pick for another defenseman. Could have seen RNH/LHD then moved for a winger this past offseason.

LOL "what they could have been if not for Columbus"..

That's funny. Yea the Oilers are bottom feeding again because they don't have Matthew Tkachuk lol..... I mean never mind the fact they have a generational talent and a boatload of top 5 picks on their roster - no - if they only had Tkachuk they would be hoisting the Cup this summer....

C'mon man...

Furthermore what does Columbus have to do with any of this?

Tkachuk is an elite winger easily compared with Patrik Kane of Chicago, go look at how Calgary is doing without him rn, Anybody without Tkachuk is a bottom feeder so, Columbus should have taken Puljujarvi. Crawford is glass sorry. Id take Glass over him any night. Chicago ain't winning the cup this year so start crying

Ok at the 2016 draft the Jackets were trying to move down in the draft. They were going to try and gain extra picks a move to 6 where Calgary was. The Flames were going to move to 3 and the Oilers were going to get some prospects and picks for not taking Dubois at 4. But the Jackets cancelled the deal because they knew Vancouver was going to take Dubois at 5.

Ok, but I still don't understand how anyone could possibly blame this for the fact the Oilers will be picking top 10 again.

As far as picks go the Oilers have been blessed.

The Oiler brass is just profoundly incompetent.

The Oilers really screwed up when they drafted Nail Yakupov - not because he turned out to be a bust BUT because it was clear at the time the Oilers needed a defenseman and did absolutely nothing about it besides draft ANOTHER forward in a draft heavy on defenseman. The Oilers should have moved down in that draft or used the first overall pick via trade to get a legitimate top 4 defenseman with top 2 potential.... Then of course the incompetent brass finally figures out they need a defenseman 4 years later lol and trade Taylor Hall of all players to fill that need, lol - Taylor Hall who is presently leading the way for the Hart Trophy...

Yea, I know it's easy to say all this in hindsight, but at the time it was painfully obvious the Oilers should have traded the pick for a defenseman or at the very last traded down to draft one..

So yea, the problem with the Oilers isn't the notion they don't have Tkachuk - it's because they have management that was clueless then and clueless now.

Wait, it's our fault that we passed on something shiny and y'all bit?

I suppose it's also our fault that we didn't trade you guys Johansen. We only asked for Eberle; history has shown that was a more than fair price. wink
