The Coming Cap Apocalypse

Created by: Viqsi
Team: 2019-20 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 9, 2017
Published: Mar. 21, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just a guesstimate of what the offseason after next (wherein we have to resign Panarin, Bobrovsky, and Werenski) might end up being like - i.e. if we can afford to keep the guys we have without incurring additional buyouts or making cap-dump trades. Juuuuust barely succeeded.

I was possibly overly conservative on the salary cap projection (if the players throw in the full escrow, it'll be exceeded *this* offseason, to say nothing of next), but we'll see. Also didn't account for any potential Seattle expansion draft.

23's the max, not the minimum. I admit that a perfectionist streak of mine insisting on trying to get a 23rd player had me sitting on posting this one for a while, tho. And if it does turn out I was overly conservative with the cap max, then it'll be easily settled.

knock about a mil off Murray's deal. unless he actually stays healthy and has a big year next year he hasn't done anything to deserve more than a minimal raise.

Fair point. Didn't take off a full mil, but there's still enough of a reduction there to call up another guy.

I really hope Provorov gets extended before Werenski because that’s too much! 6.25-6.5 is more reasonable.

I'd like to believe that's the case, and if y'all want to establish a lower comparable I certainly wouldn't object. grin I was just trying to be relatively pessimistic and conservative in an attempt to avoid "oh noes you guys are doomed regardless" arguments.

Would any other teams offer Bobo 9m a year. I doubt it, so why should the CBJ? You could argue the same for Panarin. Yea, it's cap problems when a team offers more than anyone else.

With Bob, two Vezina trophies get you quite a bit - his comparables are going to be guys like Lundqvist and Price - and I'm also doing money-for-term in that case (he'll be 34 when that contract expires). And in Panarin's case... he's already the best forward we have, and if the cap goes up substantially then yes, that's going to be pretty close to the sorts of offers he's getting. Possibly even a tad low.

Personally I think Bob likes playing in Columbus, the team that gave him the opportunity to be top dog in the yard.
I think he will sign for less than he could elsewhere, maybe $8.5M?
I think the values above are spot on.
CBJ is showing they want to lock down their younger skilled players to longer term deals at a lower cost (Jones, Wennberg, etc.)
But based on what Jones is doing right now and what he signed for, Werenski deal may come in closer to $5.5M - $6M than $7.5M.
