Description
One main trade for Domi and Hjalmarsson. I agree Domi is "struggling" but he's still going to put up 40 points on a trash Arizona team and is an assist machine. Put him next to Matthews and it should up Matthews' goals and Domi's assists. At that cap hit, he really isn't a huge risk and could end up becoming a 55-60 points/year player in Toronto. I agree his last name causes bias, and having watched the leafs for as long as I have, I would be lying to say seeing Tie's son lace em up for the leafs wouldn't be awesome. But aside from that, he is realistically going to only improve and if in a down year he's putting up 40 points, an up year could have him around 60 if not more. He also has something the leafs lack a bit in toughness, while he's not a goon, he can fight and be an aggressor.

I also added Hjalmarsson to the deal because god knows we need a stable defensemen at the back. Do I think he is still a top 4 defensemen on a nightly basis? No. But I know he's great as a 5-6 and has the ability to step up if need be for a couple games. Macinnis is another prospect I picked up for the leafs because the leafs have terrible centre depth. He has played with Bracco so maybe the two can make up 2/3's of the fourth line in the near future.

In return, Arizona get a 1st round pick. I have it at 2019 for now but if they want the 2018 one, sure. The basis is they get a first round pick. Is it a big price? No, not when you look at the bigger picture. This pick and the prospects allow us to get even more talent up front an replace some of the points we are going to lose with JVR out-pricing himself. It also happens to help us acquire a LW where we are fairly weak in comparison to Centre and RW and we get to roll top 3C of Matthews-Kadri-Nylander.
We also upgrade our defence drastically with a strong stead presence for nearly 18 minutes a game and really solidify that last pairing. I don't think anyone in the draft at 25-30 is going to fill any of those roles for us. A 25-30 picked guy probably won't be of Domi's calibre so it makes sense to me.

Then I have Leivo going the other way. It seems everyone, and I do mean everyone keeps leapfrogging him on the depth chart and thats not due to ability. He needs to play and I think Arizona gives him an opportunity to do just that to carve himself out a 3rd line role with maybe 30 points a year. They get Carrick, a young defensemen that can grow with the team. And lastly, Pickard goes the other way because we suddenly have two goalies in the AHL that are tearing it up. He would immediately get a chance to earn a spot with the NHL club and because he is young, could end up being a 1-2 (he would be the 2) option long term for Arizona.

Great trade for the Leafs but Zona declines. You've added spare parts around a 1st round pick. That won't land you Domi and Hjalmarsson

Yeah I felt it was a little light. What do you think it takes to pry them out of there?

Not sure. I'd imagine Yotes would rather wait to see if Domi could up his game instead of selling low on him.

I really don't understand the Arizona trade at all. In your narration you said Hammer isn't a $4, but a 5-6. Heck the Leafs got lots of those. Don't know why the Leafs need another winger, I would rather a centre, a position of need. We rare very few Domi trades to any other team but Leafs, but it seems to a fascination that Domi becomes a Leaf. Certainly if MacInnes is deemed an NHLer, Really if it wasn't for his father, he would just be a another struggling kid playing in the West.
If RHD Pateryn is any good, he sure will warrant more than 850,000.

I gotta agree with Pal above. . . . .we do only see trades of Domi to the Leafs (on name alone) but we should realize that Domi has fallen off the map and as such has little value outside of his name! So I disagree with others above that the offer is light! I think it would be a bit of a project, and certainly don't see him on the line with Matthews, but more fighting for a 3rd/4th line spot! (at least to start) Hjalmarsson would be an solid upgrade to our back end, and a contract fit. (might allow us to move a Dman, for additional assets), but on the last year of his contract, his value has to be kept in perspective. I know he plays the right side in AZ, but you know how Babcock loves that!!!!

Ya. Points above definitely valid. I have no desire to go get Max Domi on the team....just simply think the asking price might be higher from the Yotes perspective. Tough to evaluate players and how much the organization mucked them up.

Domi went from Junior to the NHL with no seasoning in the A. Some players can do that...others can't. Drouin kind of in a similar situation. Went #3 overall in the same draft and battled to play his way out of the AHL. First full NHL season he breaks 20 goals last year and I guess the pedigree of being #3 kept his value high enough to land Sergachev. This year he's struggling again.

Domi put up 18 his first pro season and a similar point total...but has fallen off considerably the past 2 seasons. I'm not saying he'd land a Sergachev in a trade...but I don't think they'll give up on him yet.

Arizona trade would never happen. The Yotes want way more than that.

Nylander over the past 2 seasons- 61+52 pts= 113 points
Horvat over the past 2 seasons- 52 + 57 (as per points/game)= 109 points
Pastrnak over the past 2 seasons- 70 + 70= 140

Horvat was signed for 6 years at 5.5 million and Pasternak was signed for 6 years at 6.67 so no I don't think I'm underpaying Nylander. Nylander is also playing with Matthews so I think its a very fair deal.

The leafs do have a lot of 5-6 defensemen but none from what I have seen that can take on 20-22 mins a game if need be. This gives them depth. And the while the centre position would make sense, its not realistic. Its much easier to acquire a higher end winger than a centre and I don't think you get a centre of Nylander's calibre with the assets I gave up to get Domi and Hjalmarsson. Last I did not once say that MacInnis is a sure fire NHLer. I am simply stating the fact that he has played with Bracco, and plays centre. If he ends up being a long term solution as our 4C it works out.
