Greg Pateryn might be the UFA steal of the summer

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2018-19 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 23, 2018
Published: Mar. 23, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dude's got a 60.4dZS%, still has a 50.2CF% and a 51.7FF%. Posts just under 20min/night and has been a staple of Dallas' PK. When used in a more offensive role (as he was in Montreal) or even a deeper offensive system than what Dallas has, he could probably post around 27 points a season. That's comparable to Nurse/Phaneuf/Seabrook/Lindell this season, and he's going to cost a shade over $1M.

Considering the market for RHD is so poor this year, every team should look at taking a flyer out on this guy. What a gem.

Also, this AGM assumes the Oilers do the bare minimum this offseason. UFAs to shore up the PK and balance the scoring. Maybe Rattie is the RW McDavid has been searching for.

he's crap. trust. he could barely make the stars line up at the beginning of the season, and plays sheltered minutes. he only got pushed up because of injuries to dallas's d-core

I think Pateryn would be fine as a third pairing d, but i believe there are better out there. Also, grabner is going to cost more than that- other teams with cap space will be able to offer at least a million more per year.

Sheltered minutes doesn't mean a murderer's row of dzone starts though. Especially at 20min/night. The only other RHD the Stars have on their roster is Honka, and nobody's hurt right now (dailyfaceoff has Methot back in the lineup). Unless I'm missing something, I'm not sure your assessment is entirely accurate. Klingberg hasn't missed a beat this season, so unless he's been playing #1LD for a large part of the season, I don't see it.

Not making the lineup, could that have anything to do with the organization trying desperately to get Honka going? I don't follow the Stars terribly closely, I just noticed the numbers and got my panties in a knot. I'll take those numbers with a grain of salt based on your assessment though. What specifically leads you to say he's crap? His numbers in Montreal are roughly the same as this season. Last year the entire Dallas squad was bad, which accounts for his dip in numbers last season.

Who else is available that I'm not seeing? Folin is maybe the only other guy I'd have up there with him, but I don't know how much of his numbers are being propped up by the Kings' system. Sustr and Schenn are replacement level defenseman. Bieksa is slower than the offseason in August, and Polak is, well, Polak. Green and Carlson aren't 3rd-pairing guys so I don't know what you're on about.

Also re: Grabner. He's a 3rd line winger. If a team wants to give him north of $3M, they're insane. Based on a quick look on hockey-reference, he's been wildly invisible in New Jersey, and might not hit 30 genos this season. It's bringing his value down a lot imo. He's got great utility on the PK and can pot 25+ goals a season, but he doesn't offer more than that. Not sure if I'd pay him more than $3M.

He got good when he got paired with Hamhuis, could be a play style thing, could be chemistry, but all I know is he and his agent have the same numbers you do, theyll be looking to cash in. They'll probably have bidders too, so I'd expect him to get in the range of 2.5 -3.5 for 2 - 4 years depending on who throws their hat in the ring

i watch a lot of games around the league. he's a good bottom pairing D, who can jump into ur top 4 time to time. has a hard shot from the point. thats about it. plays the body as well. nothing special. but hey, if oilers fans think he is ur savior, then sure, go ahead sign him. say whatever u want to make yourself feel good.

On this web site, RHD are at least worth at twice the money, even if they can't even play at a NHL calibre. If Pateryn is NHL competent he'll get more than 1.35m from someone. LHD Hunwick got 2.8m last year

Hickey, Sustr, John Moore, and Emelin (some may think he's top 4 but i do not think so) just to name a few I would rather have over Pateryn for a 2 year stint. You also have some cap space above (~3.6) so I do not understand why you couldn't go out and get a better player on a short term deal. Sekera's full NTC really handcuffs them right now.

And in response to grabner: just because a team would be insane, does not mean they won't offer it. The man scored a lot this season; teams will want to put him on their roster. Alternatives within EDM's price range could be maybe vanek (maybe get him on a one year, 3-3.5 mil deal) or comeau or maybe even move strome to rw and sign a center for the third line (thoughts on filppula or if you can afford him bozak?). If all else fails you could always bring hemsky back smile
