Chiarelli gets a RW, help on defense and creates cap space

Created by: GMTD
Team: 2017-18 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2018
Published: Mar. 27, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Before judging this trade look at the record over the last 6 years of RNH and Okposo.
RNH
gm goals ast pts
391 98 158 256
and Okposo
gm goals ast pts
393 101 192 293
Okposo has played in only 2 more games but has 3 more goals and 34 more assists, and actually out performed RNH.
Okposo has had a very difficult year. He has performed much better in the later half of the season (24 pts in 35 last gm) than the earlier (17 pts in first 34 gm). Playing with either McDavid or Draisaitl will dramatically improve his performance.

That $15 M in cap space looks enticing, until you realize Connor`s contract kicks in. So EDM will need to do something for fure.

OK, so is this a good trade or a poor trade? I think I helped the cap space. Would it work better if more of Okposo's salary was retained?

I have a question... Why in the world would Okposo WANT to leave a garbage team in Buffalo to go to a bad team (the Oilers)? Cause of McDavid? Well Sabres have Eichel... if this year has shown anything McJesus can't do EVERYTHING himself.

I've tried doing a few Edmonton rosters for next season and none of them have looked pretty. Huge money committed to C with only McJesus earning his wages. Too much money tied up in Lucic, Sekera and Russell with poor results. McDavid and Draisaitl deserve better wingers than these but there isn't money to pay or highly talented ELCs to fill the spots. Puljujarvi will be given every opportunity to play important minutes next season and he needs to take a major step forward.

Starting next season EDM will spend $27 M on only 3 players (Connor, Leon and Lucic). EDM will have no choice but to move RNH which you have done. Okposo is a good player and if it works and fits under the cap then go for it. Another option is to use RNH`s $6 M in contracts to bring in a draft pick and two good young payers that are paid $3 M each. You have good C`s, so makes those picks wingers. Another option is to find out why Lucic had such a poor season. If he is not a fit in EDM, he could be moved as well for cap space. EDM will be as good as Connor and Leon. Compare them to Sydney and Malkin in Pittsburgh. But they also have Kessel filling the net. I would move either RNH, Lucic or both and bring in the missing pieces.

Okposo's contract is going to get ugly in a hurry over the next few years. 5+ years on the wrong side of 30, for a winger with a spotty injury record isn't what Edmonton should be looking for

I don't think the deal is awful, but it's got the Hall for Larsson/Eberle for Strome feel to it, where you're giving up better players for worse players (not significantly worse, but looking at the past 6 years is a bit misleading when you consider Okposo was in his prime playing beside Tavares, and RNH was a teenager on a last place team).

It's something that could potentially work, but Okposo will be 30 next month, and guys don't generally get better at that age. IMO, Edmonton would be better off to move Lucic with a draft pick (probably a 2019 1st would be the cost) and get him out to free up space, rather than moving RNH. Let coaching have some flexibility with McDavid, Draisaitl and RNH all able to play centre or wing. Use Lucic's money to get a faster winger like Grabner who McDavid can work with.

Yeah! Lets throw all our bad contracts at the Sabres! They’ll like it!

No buddy. They wouldnt retain Ox and take Sekera’s contract. RNH isn’t a top 2 C. Nobody’s waiving NMCs for that trade. Just stop.
