Callahan - Bobby Ryan - Bolland

Created by: FireTippett
Team: 2018-19 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 16, 2018
Published: Mar. 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Three way trade to move contracts to more desirable locations, in which the Coyotes facilitate.
Bolland owed $1.1M non-insured cash, but TB will be able to use his LTIR exemption. Cost to get out of the Callahan contract is Raddysh + 3rd.
Ottawa takes Callahan over Ryan to save a couple million, plus cut the term in half. Cost to dump Ryan is difference between Macinnis and Brown.
Coyotes add a couple of prospects, but otherwise stay within their internal budget. They take a significant chance on Ryan being a good trigger man for Keller or Domi. Dahlin's in there just for fun, but that could be Schenn or some other FA.

Just no... there’s no point to any of that.

If Bobby Ryan actually improves Arizona's right wing depth, and I'm not saying he does, then that's a masterful series of moves to give Ottawa a slightly cheaper, slightly more tradeable contract back for him, and get Tampa to overpay for some cap relief along the way.

Ryan has had some great years, offensively, and maybe a return to being the main guy for his team will help? Maybe warm weather will help? I am not saying it's worth a shot because $29M is more than I can imagine earning in my lifetime, and that contract is just stupid. But the salary cap has a floor, and if this helps Arizona develop a boatload of rookies and ELCs at once, while spinning an injured/retired contract into a pick, two prospects, and a toxic asset they have some hope of reviving? That's pretty cool. If they can get Ryan to score twenty goals by the trade deadline (and that wouldn't be too hard) they can trade him for a decent young player. If they get him to 25, I think they keep him and celebrate.

Five stars for saving Ottawa out of self interest. It's risky and expensive, but it just.... might.... I can't say it. Good on you for coming up with this.

If anyone can pull this off, that's Chayka. I really like this for ARI. Original proposal.

They're going to have to put him on all of their power plays, for this to work. I don't know if he gets the Ovi spot, or just gets stuck in front of the net while eight other guys take turns banking shots off his shins, but he's gotta play all the power plays to turn into a fungible asset in one year. If it works, this will be better than Weekend at Bernie's.
