I originally had a '19 3rd going to CAR as well but thought it would mean giving up too much for cap room. Anybody think the CAR trade is not reasonable?

Who is more valuable to the team, Holtby or Carlson?

Besides you? I had a heck of a time googling which N. Roy is in Carolina's system. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=169632

No. The Caps are not trading Andre Burakovsky and Brooks Orpik for a fourth round pick who plays right wing unexceptionally in the AHL. The Caps have better right wings in the AHL at about the same age. Orpik is an average NHLer with a high salary that he earns with above average toughness, and Burakovsky is an aboveaverage NHLer with a low salary.

If you don't want to return a real player, just type "future considerations." Orpik has one year left and can be bought out to reup Carlson without affecting Backstrom's next contract.

I'd trade the two of them for Sanheim, if you want an estimate in Philadelphia?

Did you see the Caps game last night? Malkin on the doorstep. Empty net. Puck in front. Orpik shoves Malkin aside. No goal because no shot because no puck for one of the toughest centers in the world.

He's not a salary dump. He's a beast, who is getting old, but is still a beast. If the Caps trade his contract, they will expect something back of some value. They could sign a better AHL wing than Nicolas Roy in UFA.

It's not his favorite team. He's trolling a rival.

Overpayment for Holtby

Pffft. After three straight seasons of 40 plus wins, he struggles and only gets 33? Okay. Sure.

But it's a moot point because Colorado already have a Vezina winning goalie they got from Washington for a 1st pick. They need to build a defense in front of him, and trading Zadorov for another Vezina winner is a step backwards unless both can play at once.

So it's below Holtby's absolute trade value, but since Colorado gets almost the least benefit of any team by trading for him, it's way more than they should personally offer. Does that make sense?

That's a valid point but I am making the assumption that COL doesn't resign Varlamov because of his inconsistency and off-ice issues. Maybe that's not realistic but if I had the choice between Holtby and Varlamov, I'm taking Holtby everytime.

It's the most important position in hockey. He's been voted the best at it a couple of times, lately. He's got the record for wins in a season. He's got the 2nd best save percentage in the playoffs, ever.

The Caps once decalred that no defenseman was worth five million dollars. And St Louis signed Scott Stevens.

That was the biggest mistake David Poile made in his time in Washington, according to him--not matching that offer to Stevens.

Hey, that totally makes sense! In that case, I like this offer from Washington's side. Zadorov would be an awesome addition to the Caps, bringing speed, toughness and and almost enough hits to replace the aging Brooks Orpik, should he ever retire. I think Washington maybe even throws in Kristian Bindulis, Nate Walker, Brett Connolly, and a 3rd, just to try to even it up a bit, so Colorado doesn't feel like they've run out of prospects all at once.

How ya like me now, BBB?

I dont think sarcastically liking something just to prove a point counts...

I'm not being sarcastic. If injuries and time have taken their toll on Varlamov, the Caps totally accept the above trade. My only complaint about it was that I didn't see Colorado agreeing.

I objected to LGBstl claiming it's an overpayment, because Holtby walks on water with Brodeur. I think it's a great return for a great player, and Sakic can call up Roy and ask for a professional opinion, but if he needs a goalie, there isn't a better one available.

I just hadn't heard he was giving up on Varlamov, and Colorado fans seem to be all about building through the draft for speed and youth. Zadorov seems like a big part of that.
