It seems to be a popular topic, but why do caps fans want to trade Holtby? Sure he's had a down year but he's still an elite goalie and many teams in the NHL would die for a talent like his. Cap wise, they don't have any major rookies looking for big boy deals outside of maybe Vrana, so money shouldn't be an issue. I don't get it

We are not leveraging future assets for an older goalie who has done the same as Lehner this year when we have Ullmark ready and UPL on the way. The only way we do a deal for Holtby is if we trade older players like ROR, Okposo, and Scandella.

The caps are starting to rely on Grubauer more as of recently and Samsonov seems like he will make the jump to NA next season.

why are you trading holtby? jw....he has 2 season left on his contract.....also need a vet to mentor samsonov? seems smarter to have holtby mentor samsonov than to have grub and him fight for a starting position? i think u trade holtby you'll have a matt murray effect where theres a goalie whose never played a full season and struggles. grub value should be sky high ...imo thats when you should sell

So is Holtby the next Fleury and Grubauer the next Murray?
Seattle can pick up Holtby in the Expansion Draft.
i think Caps are going to have the same problem as Pittsburgh!

I kind of like the offers from Carolina better: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/124675

Buffalo's draft pick might be higher, but immediate depth at center and a variety of good young players and prospects at different positions seems like it will keep Washington competitive longer, rather than just one really good prospect and one local kid who is massively underperforming expectations in the AHL http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=187435

Of course, the above offer gives Washington the cap relief it's after, without throwing away Orpik, let alone paying to throw him away, so that's a plus. After watching Orpik shut down Malkin last night, in front of an empty net, I really think there are plenty of teams that would trade for him just to not lose so many games.

It's just hard to find them on this bulletin board.

holtby is 28 and a vez winning goalie.......he also finished top 5 in voting for the vez 4/5 years...........nylander isnt a nhl regular at the age of 20.........i highly doubt he plays over any of washingtons top 9 esp with gersich and i would say maybe even barber and boyd start over him.........point being youth is cool but if there isnt any promise then what the point......holtby has proven more and his value is way higher than a non nhler and a 1st

I'm not saying Nylander has proven anything. The sabres aren't in a position to leverage the youth for older players. Nylander is one of the youngest players in the AHL. He would still be in juniors if he wasn't loaned from Sweden. I'm not as worried as other people are about his production because there is a chance that it will be different in the NHL even if this trend of production he has had lately is just a fluke.

You're right that it's easier to trade Grubauer and that alone, if the cap goes up enough, will give enough cap space to sign Carlson.

If the return is awesome for trading Holtby somewhere, like with the Carolina offer I just linked, then the Caps have to take that into consideration.

Buffalo just traded a first pick for Lehner, and proved beyond all doubt that the problem wasn't Chad Johnson, but the lack of competent defensemen in front of him.

So I like the idea of the Caps signing Johnson while his value is low after several bad years to replace any goalie they trade, but I don't got this obsession with Buffalo trading its 1st and not getting back the defensive help or cap relief the Sabres actually need.

Anybody think the Caps could afford to part with Orlov or Niskanen, and take on Moulson? I think that's what it would take to get Buffalo dealing their top pick and prospects. And no, I don't think the Caps consider moving a top pairing defeseman off of a President's Trophy win, or taking on an AHL healthy scratch at an equivalent cap hit, just to add prospects. Not remotely. Never in a million years. Which is what all the Sabres fans keep telling us about trading a 1st for a goalie while they still have the starting goalie they just traded a 1st for.

If you want to trade Holtby for a higher first pick than Carolina's, and a good young player or two, wait for Chicago to get a sense of how Crawford is recovering from his concussions, and to see what kind of cap space they can clear to add free agents and try to get right back to the playoffs. Their fans are pencilling in Collin Delia in the NHL, but I watched Delia in the ECHL this year and I wasn't that impressed.

If you just really want Nylander, I think Buffalo might throw him in to swap Lehner for Holtby and a top defenseman. I just don't think the Caps have any defensemen to trade. Maybe Djoos or Johansen?

Orpik would help them out more, but they're not interested in a 37 year old, so move on.

Or bite the bullet and trade him inside the division to a team you hope you can still beat now and then. The Flyers with Neuvirth are average. If they'll give a first, Sanheim, and a couple high risk/high reward forward prospects for Holtby, the worst that happens is the Flyers knock the Caps out of the playoffs and win the Stanley---guys, wait---I've spotted a flaw in my plan.
