I could be wrong about this, but I think WInnipeg is at once flattered an annoyed by your offer. On the one hand, it's a huge overpayment, what with the top prospect and two first round picks in a deep draft, and a capable fill-in who is just three minutes short of playing as good defense as Trouba.

On the other hand, they're trying to win right away. They want NHL players to help them do that. You've given them a lot of cap space, but the UFA market at right D, after the two superstars, is empty this summer. It's a tough call.

More importantly, this thread did not live up to the "What would you do for a Klondike bar" reference in the title. I fully expected a list of embarrassing stunts and hijinks you would perform if the Flyers would trade for Trouba.

haha...no hijinks (great word, doesn't get used enough tho)

I do think it might take an overpayment to pry him away, otherwise they take him to arbitration and squeeze his last 2 RFA years out of him.
Really it only works if A. Winnipeg doesn't want to pay him 8+ million per year (they have some big commitments coming down the road) or B. Trouba wants out of Winnipeg (Rumors of this during last contract impasse)

This might be a dumb question, but if Carlson isn't worth 8M, why is Trouba?

You're really not asking a question, you're making a factual statement. Trouba isn't worth 8m. This happens when teams trade for a RFA. They then have to justify the trade to their fans by signing the player....and often overpaying the player as the player nears UFA.

It's a good question....i'm not sure Carlson won't get 7-8 million as an UFA, adding to the price tag of UFA's this year will be the 5-7 million jump in cap space.
The difference in the two IMO is age. There's no way i'd want to sign 28yo Carlson longer than 4-5 yrs.

I don't know that teams need to justify their deals by signing players to big deals...IMO teams are always in different positions in terms of team building. One may value a players characteristics/abilities more than another...thus leading them to trade for them and maybe pay them more.

I think ideally the Jets would love to sign Trouba to a long term deal...i'm just not sure he wants to be there, based off of the last rounds of negotiations between the team and player. Adding to their differences might be figuring out where Trouba fits in their Salary structure with Laine & Connor becoming RFA's in another year and Ehlers deal kicking in next year.
