    So what is Karlsson's new contract? I know the cap is going up, but geez the Sabres are getting close to with a poor team. Lot of big contacts.

    There is no way that the Sabres could make this trade...... The reasons why Botterill would not make this trade:

    1. The team has too many holes and you are gutting the current options from within to assist in filling those holes;

    2. This is the type of trade that gets a GM fired.... I think he really wants to get through year 2 of his first go round as a GM;

    3. Risto is not going anywhere he is very much in favor by ownership, management & the room;

    4. Nylander is coming into his own the last month in the AHL once he got over the injury bug that hit him this year;

    5. Bobby Ryan contract alone will get a GM fired;

    6. The Sabres give up 2 first round selections in Risto & Nylander (3 if you count Girgensons) though he was a reach when he was selected in the 1st round then they also give up pick #32 in this years draft..... I just do not see that happening;

    I do like the idea of Jack taking #9 but I think he will probably opt to stay with #15

    Back loaded so maybe like 8 or 9 mil cap hit first couple years and increases once Bogosian, Pominville, Moulson, Okposo and Scandella contracts are up.

    That’s not how the Salary Cap works

    If u have a 2year contract for example:
    It can be structured:
    Year1- 3mil
    Year2- 7mil
    And the Cap Hit for BOTH years is still 5mil
    It just averages out, no matter how u structure it
    Even if it was 9mil one year & 1mil the next...
    still a 5mil Cap hit both years

    Also...
    NO INTEREST IN KARLSSON

    He’s awesome, but just too old to fit our timeline
    He’ll be 29 to start his new deal with us
    But it won’t be till he’s like 32/33 before we are legit Cup contenders
    Plus,
    his huge Cap hit is not advisable with his injury
    He wasn’t the same this year
    That’s concerning

    U have us getting Dahlin anyways
    No need for Karlsson at 12mil per

    I would love to have Karlsson. I just do not think Ristolainen and a bunch of 2nd (at best), 3rd & 4th line players and a good 2nd round pick will do the trick.

    No so thing as back loaded cap hits though. The cap remains constant throughout the contract.

    Sabres1108 I love your enthusiasm and your dogged determination to to make a deal with Karlsson.

    I appreciate that you took Nylander out of the deal to make it more palatable for the Sabres. If I am Botterill I still would not make the trade. He is risking his future on Karlsson not Eichel in this deal. If Karlsson is hampered by the injury he does not perform to the contract value.... if he does not age well he does not perform to the contract value... this means he becomes a liability to the team due to the cap hit. Botterill has preached the most precious asset a team can have is cap flexibility. I do not think it is possible to have 2 players making $10 million a year when you have yet to build out your team.

    My recommendation is we win the lottery and take Dahlin. The Sabres then sign Nelson. Out top six D would be Risto, Scandella, Guhle, McCabe, Nelson & Dahlin. Botterill can decide if the market will produce anything for Bealieu & Bogosian.
