Tavares gets the *9-year-deal* from Van

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2018-19 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 9, 2018
Published: Apr. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
JT wants an 8 year deal, so the Canucks offer him GIGANTIC cash on a one year contract so they can try to negotiate a full 8 year pact during the season. This gives him a chance to see if the Canucks young talent is impressive enough to keep him around long term. If not, or if the team thinks the cap hit is going to be too high long term, he's free to sign elsewhere next summer. In that scenario, and if the team is out of the playoff picture at the deadline, Tavares can indicate which contenders he'd be willing to be moved to for a playoff run.

Boqvist falls to the Canucks at the #6 pick at the draft, but they let him develop for another year outside the NHL. Other prospects only make the team if they beat out veterans for a spot at camp.

If you sign you still only have the rights to give him a 7 year extension so its still 8

Interesting. I thought it was a great loophole, but I guess the NHL thought of it, too.

This is a great way for Tavares to maximize his career earnings, if he can stay healthy for a year. So about an 80% chance that he gets a bigger AAV with an expanding cap, a good season outside NYI to show, and more bidders next season, and a 20% chance that he is leaving 55M on the table.

He actually signs the contract before his agent catches him and sets it on fire.

It would be interesting to see what happens if this happened, I just can't see Tavares signing with Vancouver. Tavares is most likely signing with a contender such as Tampa Bay. Even if this did/could go through, I don't think Tavares would sign with a bottom of the standings team in the Canucks.

I’m still confused as to what is stopping him from signing a 1 year contract on July 1, and then on July 2nd signing an 8 year extension with that same team therefore giving him a 9 year contract...

As a free agent he can only get 7 years if you trade for his "rights" from the isles you can then give him 8 years like you're his original team

But if he signs a 1 year contract on July1, don’t you have his rights and therefore are able to extend 8 years after the 1st year is done?

I hear what you're saying....I believe the CBA stipulates that you can't sign a player to an 8 year contract unless he was on your team since the most recent trade deadline. This prohibits the team from doing what you're saying...Signing a 1yr deal on July 1st and then immediately extending.

In this scenario...the Canucks (or any team) could sign JT to a 1 year deal and then extend him for 8 years once the 2018-19 trade deadline passes.

Nope its his draft team or in the case of NCAA the team that gives you your first contract if a player is traded his rights are traded with him for example san jose has evander kanes rights because winnipeg traded his rights to buffalo who then traded it to san jose so san jose could resign him for 8 yrs if they wanted to this offseason if he leaves and hypothetically goes anywhere else even buffalo or winnipeg he can only get max 7 years

CBA links it to whichever team a player is on between the last trade deadline and the expiry of the contract....has nothing to do with rights being traded.

"An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however,
that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8)
years if that Player was on such Club's Reserve List as of and since the
most recent Trade Deadline. "

Just saying when you trade a player you trade his rights with him

Thanks for all the feedback fellas. Based on the wording of the CBA, looks like the 2019 trade deadline would be the key date in this scenario. The Canucks could pull off another coup if they kept him past that deadline, signed him to an 8 year extension, then traded him to a contender of his choice on the summer of 2019! Get it done Benning!!

I'm a bit late to this party, but I actually just looked this up this morning. I had the same idea, that since a player can re-sign a year out from free agency you could sign the extension the moment the first one was inked. Seemed like a great idea, and also one that would have been done by now if it really was a thing. Sure enough:

Article 50.5 Team Payroll Range System; Lower Limit and Upper Limit; Payroll Room; Lower Limit and Upper Limit Accounting.
(f) Contract Extensions.
(iv) A Player who is party to a one-year SPC may not enter into an "extension"
of such SPC prior to January 1 of the League Year covered by such SPC.
