So Buffalo trades O'Reilly, $3.8M and a 2nd round pick for Zaitsev, Leivo, Janmark, and a 2nd? Makes sense. I also see Dallas' side of it. Curious how Toronto values Spezza and Beaulieu, or whether this is really just a cap move for them to keep their top guys, with a couple of rentals thrown in to balance things out.

Dallas' issues are the fact that their 2nd line isn't scoring at all. Sure they'd get a center that is a good 2C, but giving up Janmark leaves them in the same spot that they'd be prior to the trade. I don't see Janmark being a part of this trade simply because Dallas would come out of the deal still needing 2nd line help. It would make more sense for Dallas to sign a good FA forward to put on that 2nd line instead of trading away 2nd line talent. I like O'Reilly, I just don't see Dallas trading away 2nd line talent for 2nd line talent. They may be more inclined to give up a prospect than someone like Janmark.

Dallas would be better off trading Spezza straight to Toronto, without the middle man (Buffalo). A 50% retained Spezza and a prospect for Curtis McElhinney solves their backup problem, moves Spezza, and helps Toronto with the depth at Center. Frees up some cap space for a bigger name Free Agent that could slot on to that 2nd line and fix their 2nd line scoring issue (JVR, Perron, Kane, Neal, etc.)

The issue with Dallas was depth scoring, but it was also mentioned y they didnt get that depth scoring: youth not stepping up. If the youth can get more motivated to step up next year, that problem can b solved, but with a rookie learning the game comes rookie mistakes, which is where ROR comes in. He can mentor the kids and help in the defensive end when they make those mistakes.

Sure, they can sign a FA, and if they have extra space after the deal, they still can. I just thought Dallas could use that 7.5M more productively than declining Spezza (and they save money on the deal being 3-way because they dont have to b the ones to retain him.)

Guys like Janmark and Faksa had career season this season, so I don't quite agree with you when you say the reason we had depth issues was because our young guys didn't step up. The issue was that some of the veteran guys like Spezza, Hanzal, and Roussel were just about non-existent all year. And defensively, we already have to of the better two-way centers in the league in Faksa and Seguin (really took his two-way game to the next level this season). O'Reilly would be great, but like I said earlier Janmark had a career year this season, and he was playing with a rotating door and Center and RW. He's going to be an annual 55+ point player in the NHL within the next 3 years, if they get him some help on the 2nd line.

Regardless of where Spezza goes, Dallas is going to have to eat some salary. He's on such a bad contract, but retaining 50% of his salary is a more cost-efficient way to handle his contract, as opposed to buying him out and eating $2.5M for the next two years. As nice as it would be to have Spezza's deal taken by another team, it's just not realistic.
