Sorry but adding Brouwer decreases the value on CGY's side by a fair bit. You would be lucky to get Zaitsev and 2 other pieces.

There's just nothing there to be worth giving up a 24 year old top pairing D signed long term to a reasonable contract.

Zaitsev is a decent Dman but probably better suited to 3rd pairing than 2nd based on his play driving ability. Kapanen has decent upside, but he may never turn into much more than a bottom 6 forward. Sparks is a good AHL goalie who may make a decent NHL backup. Rosen is a B/C prospect. Martin is a healthy scratch cap dump. The 2019 1st shouldn't be particularly high.

It's a high quantity of pieces, but most of them are spare parts that can easily be found other places without giving up Hamilton. Almost every single time that you give up the best player in the trade, you lose the trade, often lopsidedly. This trade would be another example of that.

People think Zaitsev is worse than he is. You have to remember that he is stuck playing with the turnover machine Gardiner who also hates the D to D pass.

the fact is the way he's playing he should not be making that much for that long. Brouwer is a pretty painless buyout for any well managed team. 1.5 cap hit for 4 years won't sink anyone. 4.5 for 6 could really screw the Leafs.

I think this could actually be very close....

I like KK28, but if CGY fans prefer, how about this:

Connor Brown (20G scoring RW - do the dirty work on 1st line)
Calvin Pickard (more established NHL b/u; asset that could be flipped if Gillies/etc are ready)
Nakita Zaitsev
Matt Martin (who I think Burke would love for the 4th line, provides leadership)
Jeremy Bracco (RW potential #3 scoring RW)
1st rd pick + 4th round pick

for

Douggie Hamilton + Brouwer ($1.5m retained)

You've add more cap to the Leafs with really just NHL player. Hamilton. Despite reports, the Leafs who were 12th in GAA aren't desperate to add a RHD at any costs. Part of Hamilton's value is on the PP to Calgary. Leafs had the 2nd best PP, so he isn't really need there. Basing a trade just around Hamilton might be more practical to the Leafs.

jluqueSF. You made a comment. " Burke would love (Martin)." Seeing Burke's assessment NHL players with the Leafs and Flames, the Flames would be best to keep Burke away from personnel decisions....on the ice and off the ice.

Zaitsev played really well on the top pairing his first NHL season but looked worse after his injury this year. Selling him off like some cap dump makes no sense.

He is low on confidence but playing better this playoff series. He will go back to being a 2nd pairing defender next year I reckon and his contract will be more than fair if he does.

Calgary isn't trading Hamilton for a bunch of little pieces. If he moves it's for a major piece. They can get secondary scoring and 5, 6 defenseman and keep the guy.

This.

If Treliving tries to move Hamilton for a package like that he better be shown the door immediately. If Hamilton is shopped, it better be for an impact forward and not a bunch of bit pieces and they sure as hell better not decrease his overall value by including Brouwer in the deal.

Looks like the Phaneuf trade all over again.
