Description
Well watching the playoffs has made me start to dream of Dumba... so I put together a team in which Buffalo/Minnesota work out a deal.

My theory is in order to obtain Dumba the Sabres have to come hard so I use Nylander, McCabe & SJS 1st (after they sign Kane) in 2019 to get the rights to Dumba (he has to sign with Buffalo or no deal).

I then go to Carolina and work a deal for Faulk by trading ROR & Baptiste.

This sets up the Sabres D.

To address the forward group I take Orpik off of Washington's books (they retain $1,000,000) and get the RFA rights to Tom Wilson. In order to do this I send Baptiste and Griffith to the Caps.

I then look to the NYI and swap the RFA rights for Brock Nelson for the RFA rights to Lehner.

The final trade is with Pittsburgh sending Beaulieu for Hagelin.

I hope you enjoy the team I have put together. As is always the case I welcome and appreciate all your positive and negative feedback.

You've overpaid Dumba, but if Minni wants some cap relief, they might take your package. ROR can get more in a trade. Faulk only has two years left till a UFA, there has been some team that likes ROR long term.

        Five stars for trading O'Reilly.
I think you tried really hard to make the trades fair for the other team.
You built a really good team all the same.
        Good job.

Thank you for the feedback...... I will provide you with my rationale on both Dumba & ROR:

        1. The Sabres will have to overpay Dumba and Minnesota because of the mess of an organization that the Sabres in the current state. I would hope that Dumba would not cost $7,500,000 a season but I wanted to see if I could pull together a decent squad if we had to go to $7,500,000 a year. I thought about a sign and trade with Minnesota in order to get the 8th year but I opted to give Dumba a break with only having to possibly endure the Sabres for 7 years. I do agree that the package being sent to Minnesota is on overpay (maybe I claw back Cornel). My thoughts are that Nylander is the key piece. I put McCabe in as a bottom pair Dman that is young and has years ahead of him (I really would like to keep him in the Sabres organization), the 1st round pick of SJS in 2019 is just a must have for Minnesota then I put Fasching for organizational depth;

        2. I have seen so many ROR deals on this site and most are met with 'Oh no way are we paying that much for that GUY'.... blah blah blah.... so I decided to just to a straight one for one. I also agree that Faulk alone is not enough but as I said earlier I was trying to see if the Sabres overpay can I build a club that will look better on the ice next year and future years;

Thanks you so much for taking the time to offer your feedback it is very much appreciated.

Tom Wilson's a first line right wing on a division leader. Brooks Orpik's a 19 minute per night defenseman on same.

Girgensons is a cautionary tale about why you let top prospects develop before sticking them in the NHL. Baptiste is pretty decent AHLer who hit 20 goals in 16-17, with Rochester, but slowed down a bit this year.

I'd bet Washington would love to have Baptiste in Hershey, but not at that price.

Thank you my brother in arms!

I tried to do exactly that make trades where the Sabres may have overpaid and in the end put together a team you and I would actually enjoy watching!!!!

Eli then tell me what it would take to secure Orpik and Wilson in addition to Baptiste and Girgensons. I think you are selling Baptiste short but that is just my opinion.

My fall back position is to not take on Orpik's contract and forgo Wilson and instead sign a UFA as I would have $5,000,000 or so to play with and also have Girgensons & Baptiste to keep in the organization or move on to another team.

The Washington deal was actually a deal I put together at the last minute before I published the team.

Eli I would also like to know how you are going to be able to afford:

        1. Signing Wilson
        2. Signing Grubs
        3. Signing Smth-Pelley
        4. Assuming you let Chaison walk
        5. Signing Beagle or are you letting him walk
        6. Signing Carlson

They are going to have to make a deal somewhere.

Hershey is a pretty important AHL franchise. They've won, like, eleven Calder Cups. Washington fares as they do. I mean absolutely no disrespet to Baptiste by saying Hershey would love to have him, and that isn't to doubt he'll eventually get to the NHL. Hershey just really needs guys who are waiver exempt and can score more goals than Chris Bourque.

If any of the ridiculous scenarios I've been posting for Washington come remotely close to true (full rebuild with no one over 30 left skating? Carlson for Tavares signs and trades? Trade both goalies away, keep Carlson and Beagle, and add more UFAs?) any of these at all, then, yeah, you can totally have an NHL player for taking Orpik. But... can it be Brett Connolly? Orpik and Wilson together equals five hits per game in the regular season, or seven in the playoffs. Wilson also had 35 points this year, kills penalties, deters opposing enforcers, and has decent chemistry with Ovechkin.

Connolly just scores goals, skates quickly through traffic, doesn't hit, doesn't fight, doesn't really kill penalties. Totally get him for taking Orpik, and get picks, too. Wilson, even dumping salary, costs a first or a top prospect who hasn't gone bust yet.

I really like Wilson's game but to take on Orpik at 5 bones I can not see giving up a 1st or a top prospect but that is what is so great about this site it allows people to differ on what they think is fair value!!!!

I am most certainly wrong as I am wrong 99.99999% of the time.

LOL. I'm about 50% in favor of the Caps just trashing everything over UFA age. In that case, maybe just throw in Larsson and a defensive prospect? If the Caps rebuild, "can play in Hershey" is the highest praise I can give. If not, it's still important. But Wilson is more of a fan favorite than Grubauer or Carlson. MacLellan would never hear the end of trading him just to dump Orpik.

I totally understand how difficult it is to move a fan favorite..... as I said I really like his game he is so much fun to watch.

I have no choice as the Sabres are such a dumpster fire at the moment.

I put another team up without a Washington trade also changed each deal just a bit..... let me know what you think.... I even mentioned somebody in the description!
