That montreal trade is just wow, 3 of the top 5 players with the most value on the habs AND a top 7th pick for one star and a cap dump. MB might be a moron but even he wouldnt expect this trade

Most don’t give Ovi enough credit because HE can’t win in the playoffs, but really it’s his team in general. His playoff numbers are good. That trade, tho, is too much for Ovi. I’d take out the #7 OVR to make it more even, but WSH needs to add a Defensive piece that would benefit MTL if they want the #7 OVR. Maybe add a sign-and-trade JC?

I don't think so even tho ovi might be the best pure goal scorer we have even seen it still doesnt help the habs up the middle, which is there biggest weakness. But i think a sign and trade for JC plus ovi for patch, gally and weber plus mtl own second round pick is fair. I cant see them moving the 7th overall unless they are moving up and down but not out of the first round.

Whether they lose in five or win the Cup, the first three trades are good long-term because they trade guys at the top of the game for a lot of young talent and draft picks. Signing UFAs to round out the team and give up nothing seems to work okay half the time.

Could sign Carlson, pick up Karlsson at the deadline for less, and hit the '19 playoffs with Carlson, Karlsson, Weber on the right hand side, while Bouchard develops properly in juniors.

I am okay trading Niskanen at the deadline if Weber seems fully recovered and healthy. He's certainly as good as Nisk this year, but only in the quarter of the season he played.

Lucas Johansen was above average but by no means a dominant offensive force in the AHL. He still can learn a lot more at the minor pro level, so he should play another year on Hershey's top pair and both special teams, if the Caps want to get their draft pick's worth out of him. Djoos is better right now. Johansen has a higher ceiling. Let them both keep improving where they are. Kemny's cap hit will be lower than Johansen's anyway, and he can sit in the press box as good as anybody.

I think taking the pick out takes away what I see as Washington's motivation.

A couple Montreal fans have previously written Ovechkin trades almost that loaded, signed Tavares and Stastny, and called it good enough.

I'd rather see the Caps get younger, rather than older. I'd look at Galchenyuk, Lehknon, Juulsen, and top picks as primary targets in Montreal trades (as CCG has in the past. Not claiming credit. Just expressing a preference). Weber is intriguing, though, because Trotz.

Weber is still good. Orpik isn’t

Right. But Weber is mortal. Orpik isn't.
