Now I'm worried I gave up too much! Haha, good deal though. I heard a lot of you guys were frustrated with Spezza's down year. Fair to sell on him. He is older and back issues are legit. Reminds me of Lecavalier, but I can see the Flyers taking this sort of low risk gamble on a one year rental while prospects continue to develop in the minors.

Hopefully the cap room does a lot of good for your club.

On a few AGM teams, I had Spezza moving for a second rounder. Dallas loses on talent but gains on cap space. But if Dallas wants Elliott, that works too.

I love the deal as a Stars fan, but realistically, I don't see Philadelphia taking Spezza without Dallas retaining half of his contract. Even most (intelligent) Stars fans realize that in order to move Spezza, the Stars will have to eat half of his $7.5M deal. I do believe that Philly is the most realistic trade destination for him, and I do think that a goalie is the likely return. I'm not familiar enough with Philadelphia to say whether Elliott or Neuvirth is the more likely trade candidate (though Neuvirth had a phenomenal game tonight). I'd be surprised if Dallas got anything other than a goalie in return, and I honestly think Dallas is going to have to give up a late round pick & a mid-level prospect in order to sweeten the deal for Philly. Even at $3.75M, Spezza is still expensive for a 3C.

But I mean, if Philly wants the full $7.5M, who am I to say no? Haha

That's really no issue for Philly for 2018-19. The RFAs start coming due the following season., so the Flyers likely don't want to commit big money and term to a free agent center. However, a big 1 year deal via trade with some added value in draft picks coming back is just icing on the cake.

Yes, saw yours and posted mine. I had been drafting this through the week and figured if a Dallas fan was thinking the same thing, maybe I'm not so crazy. I'm not sure what fair compensation is in the minds of NHL GM's but I think we both have identified the essence of a sensible classic hockey trade here.

Which goalie do you see Philadelphia trying to move? I was under the impression that Elliott was doing pretty good for the Flyers this year, but given the fact that Neuvirth got the start tonight, in a do-or-die game, I'm honestly not sure who Philadelphia would prefer to keep.

It's a great question. I personally like keeping Neuvy for what I perceive as better locker room chemistry. He's been here longer, and has closer ties. Fun fact, he's actually married to Radko Gudas' sister.

Elliott did play well through the regular season, especially at 5v5, and I don't blame him for our lopsided losses in the playoffs. Where we struggled in the regular season was on PK, and his all our goalies' numbers suffered from the problems on that unit. That said, some fans have certainly been tough on Elliott in the playoffs. Neuvy doesn't get the rabble in an uproar because he was amazing against the Caps in the playoffs a couple years back. People regard him as clutch but streaky and injury plagued.

Either could be traded, but on balance, I'd rather keep Neuvy because he's more established here.

I've always just viewed Spezza's contract as something that will be a burden to get rid of. He definitley has some left in the tank, obviously not near what he was, but especially in this role with a 3rd line that looks really good.
This kind of move really makes sense for a team like PHI, who can compete and wants a center for a year to avoid the commitment. Hard to know the pieces going back and forth, but this is a great idea.
Do you think this kind of deal would work where DAL sends Spezza and say a 6th for a 3rd, or even swap the 6th for a 5th?

Thanks for your comment. No, I don't think that would work under the circumstances. Philly FO likely knows very few teams can afford to take on Spezza's contract, and would insist on receiving a net gain in draft pick value in the deal. Like you, I'm really not sure how the compensation would shake out precisely, but I can't see Hextall parting with picks for Spezza or trading back in the draft order for Spezza. There are just too many alternative options at 3C out there in the off-season to construe the leverage as the other way around. Edit: That said, Spezza has a great shot and ok speed and size, so he still brings value. I don't think it would take that much, but we will see!
