Since Leafs fans hate him

Description
In my opinion Jake Gardiner is a good defenseman and the Leafs should keep him, but from everything I have read Leafs fans hate the guy and want him gone.

He only has 1 year left before he's an UFA so his value isn't going to be sky high but he is still worth a decent amount.
Murphy is 25 and has 4 years remaining on his contract. That provides cost certainty for the Leafs that will surely need it in the coming future.
Chad Krys is a 20 year old college defenseman. He is offensive minded, skilled, smooth skating and has good potential.

The Hawks get a LHD that can play big minutes behind Keith.

As for the right side this next year... IMO Rutta Seabrook and Oesterle are all 2nd pairing guys on the right side so whoever plays with Keith is a guess.

They have enough available cap to sign decent forward or D still too.

I don't hate Jake. I wish I knew the 41 games that Jake would be great....and play him in those games and then have sit in the 41 games that he is going to stink. If the Leafs think Murphy can be NHL competent for a few years they take that deal you suggest.

I like the deal too. I actually think this also give Stan some optionality. The Hawks should certainly draft a Dman with their top pick...having Henri J, Ian Mitchell, Forsling, ***Bouchard***. The Plan A would certainly be extend Gardiner, but if for whatever reason it doesn't work out (Q/money/on ice play/etc...)...trade him at the TDL. Keep working to reduce the cap and develop high end talent.

I like the Gardiner trade. We could use a fresh face on D.

I like the Gardiner trade and the comment about keeping him too. Just an idea.. he would be in contract year next season, how good he would be tho.. I think he would improve a lot next year but then the same so keeping him in his contract year and letting him go while developing young guns would be very good.

Nice move. I think we could throw in a 3rd rounder or so instead of Krys and that deal would still work.

Good thing about this deal is the Hawks have to opportunity to resign Gardiner if he fits well or let him walk and leave space open to sign a different FA defenseman during that summer. They also have Jokiharju and Mitchell who seem to be closing in on the NHL soon. AND a 7th overall pick (lottery pending) that could likely be a defenseman a year away from the NHL too.
So from how I see it, the Hawks need to find 1-2 top 4 defenseman that can play with them for the next year or 2 until their seemingly NHL bound D prospects arrive. Murphy does not fall into that category so I'm all about moving him.

I also believe a deal could get done here with a draft pick instead of Krys.

Agreed, and that would be preferable. I think Toronto would be silly to not take this proposed offer, especially if they feel Gardiner will not come back.

I like the trade. However, Duclair isn’t getting $2M for a bridge deal coming off an injury; I’m not sure he’s worth the Hawks resigning. If they give him an offer, it would $1.5m. Also don’t think Hino gets more then a 2 year and $1.75M. Not resigning Martinenson in a reserve role would be bad; he’s cheap and big yet plays fast. Lastly, sign KANE, JVR, Perron or Neal. We need another top rated LW in case Saad craps the bed again.

I'm also VERY curious what Duclair will get. If I'm Bowman...I leave it up to arbitration. Duclair's camp will most certainly be relying on his draft status and rookie year contributions, but he really hasn't done much in the last two years. Sure there are various reasons...Injury this year...last year Chayka sent him down to Tuscon, but arbitration is going to compare him to other NHL players and speed doesn't get you paid. Stats get you paid. AHL time and injuries are NOT helping him at all!

The trade was the entire purpose of the post. Debating whether Duclair gets 500k less on his deal or Hinostroza get 250k less on his is completely irrelevant to the main concept of this post. Especially when they have $10M in cap space still.
Also, if you read the description I very clearly state that there is enough cap space to sign a forward or D. Obviously they can sign one of those guys if they wanted. But again, this wasn't the point of the post.
