Trading the 10th overall pick for better D, depth and cap space

Description
One EDM beat writer I read felt that the Oilers are likely to deal the 10th overall for blueline help. Cue the phone call from Jimbo Benning...

I know Tanev isn't the PP QB that Oiler fans are pining for, but having him for 2 years at half price while ditching Lucic's contract is a huge cap bargain. He dramatically improves the team defense in two ways; he's the type of defensive Dman Chiarelli wanted when he signed Russell, and he also pushes Russell off the depth chart when everyone's healthy.

A healthier year from Klefbom and Sekera, plus development from Nurse and Benning, will go a long way in helping the PP from within. Granlund is a versatile two-way guy that will help competition among the forward group.

Unless you are retaining on Lucic, the 10th overall pick isn't enough if you expect Tanev in return.

Tanev will only play half the games, so paying him half the salary makes sense.

The 10th overall should yield a good prospect, probably on D. While Tanev is a fantastic defensive Dman, his injury history drops his overall value a fair bit.

Doesn't matter you are asking for 2 NHL players. One is a top 10 defensive D-man. In exchange for the 10th overall pick might be fair.
But to have to stomach the Lucic deal isn't going to happen. Unless you are taking back the Loui Errikson deal.

Well if you're right then I hope the Canucks make that deal!

I think edm gets screwed in this trade given Tanev injury history.

Lucic could rebound with a fresh start and be a 40 point checker, so his valueshouldn’t Be an enormous amount of negative. Tanev is probably worth the 25th pick or so imo, so you’re saying lucic’s negative value is worth the 2x 2nds or so to move into the top 10?

Granlund has almost no value imo, if he had value to anyone it could be Minnesota because that could give him a huge boost and make him totally different. Everywhere else he’s a middling asset.

I think giving up the 10th pick to get rid of 6m cap for a 40 game playing defenseman + fringe player is wasting the chance to get an all star. Dobson could be sitting there at 10 and the only Edm people who need to win this season are: Peter Chiarelli and Todd McLellan. Fans should be patient.... it’s not like McDavid, Draisaitl, nuge, Puljujärvi, klefbom, nurse or Larsson are getting old. They are the core and all basically young still.

tanev is not even close to that value and vancouver want picks badly so the 10th is perfect for them as they are rebuilding they can take on lucic's bad contract for such a good pick and he cant help them grow. (ranger fan)

Fair assessment if you really think Lucic is capable of 'rebounding'. I highly doubt Dobson falls to the 10th pick though.

I don't consider 40 points to be a "rebound" season. Lucic tanked in the last 4 months of the 2017-18 season, but prior to that (1.5 years in Edmonton) he scored 76 points in 120 games, a pace of 82, 22-30-52. Fifty points is a rebound IMO.

That could be true but I was keeping expectations low. I meant to say over 40, which I still consider rebounding from his below 35 tally. To rebound like Boston it is indeed 50 though, however any type of rebound would make Vancouver the clear winner In this deal if they were planning on moving tanev to the highest bidder.

A 45-50 point lucic + pick #10 is an incredible return for Tanev and a spare part imo. No one can be sure lucic will rebound, but the chances go up imo if he gets moved. He’d definitely want to prove himself year 1 at a new destination so this is a smart move by Vancouver imo.

Ty Smith or Bode Wilde are the only realistic possibilities at #10, Obviously Dahlin, Boqvist, Hughes, Bouchard/Dobson should be off the boards before pick #10.
