Speculation abounds!

Description
1) Draft day speculation:

a. Ottawa drops down to 4th overall. “Darn it!” you might say. But, wait, there’s more! Ottawa has many options when it comes to the 4th overall pick! “What the hell are you talking about Green?” you might ask. Well, Carolina’s new Owner has gone on record to state that the Hurricanes require more size and grit leaving me to believe that they want to select Tkatchuk with their pick (one could argue that Svechnikov is size and grit but he is a different kind of size and grit). Carolina doesn’t want to repeat what happened with Semin so I have a feeling they want to avoid Svechnikov completely.

b. This leaves Montreal with the 3rd overall pick. Montreal would certainly like to have a natural goal scorer (Zadina or Svechnikov) but their need is at centre and the back end. With the abundance of puck moving defensemen in this draft, does Montreal go for the likes of Boqvist or even Bouchard over Zadina or Svechnikov? Or do they go with Wahlstrom, the top centre in the draft?

c. So, this leaves Ottawa with either Svechnikov or Zadina. Svechnikov has “liked a tweet” stating that Ottawa is a garbage fire and no one wants to go there. Does this indicate his true feelings on Ottawa? Does Ottawa choose to pass over him and go with Zadina? I would like to think so. Either forward would slot in nicely in the top 6… But, wait, there’s more! It all depends on if Pierre Dorion decides to move Karlsson. Does Pierre decide to pick a potential elite level defenseman in Bouchard or Boqvist if they still remain to replace the likes of Karlsson in the future? Ottawa does have enough depth at the forward level to consider this. It also depends on the return you get from Karlsson. Ottawa also has an opportunity to add depth to their prospect pool with Pittsburgh’s 22-31st overall selection… Speculation abounds!

2) Moving on from aging forwards and bad contracts:

a. I have a feeling Vegas is in some sort of buyers regret with Tatar. He hasn’t lived up to the expectations and is constantly in and out of the lineup. There is no way they can get back what they gave up for him so it’s the next best thing: a change of scenery! Vegas has had interest in Ryan (only if Karlsson is involved of course) so I think a move can be made if Ottawa is ready to give up a potential top 6 forward in Luchuk. They would have to involve more draft picks as well because Ryan’s contract is bad. On top of that, Ottawa would need to retain a portion of Ryan’s contract because his contract is bad.

b. Buying out Gaborik is a must. I don’t see this guy getting any healthier and will either spend all the time on the LTIR or being shelved forever (retirement is also a possibility). Game is too fast for him and he has had a too many injuries to justify playing long term.

c. Either burying Burrows or limiting his playtime to like… 4 minutes a game. This guy also can’t play hockey anymore. They picked him up for grit and veteran leadership but he has been none of those things. Utterly useless and I hated the day they made that trade.

3) Trading Zack Smith for Mike Stone (the brother of Mark):

a. This swap benefits both clubs in my opinion. Zack adds size and grit to Calgary’s centre group and can also spend time on the wing as a top 6. Discipline is an issue sometimes. Mike Stone, I feel, adds much needed depth to the right side, especially if they decide not to resign Wideman. Good shutdown guy.

4) Going after Calvin De Haan:

a. Hometown boy with similar play styles to that of Marc Methot. Would fit nicely alongside Karlsson (if they decide to keep him of course). Potential for a 4-6 year deal at an average of about 4.5 million.

5) Resigning the RFA’s:

a. Stone is a huge piece to the top 6 of the Senators. Leads by example and a long term contract is a must. 8 years at 6.5-7.5 million.

b. Ceci is… as much as people in Ottawa don’t like his play, he does have an upside. He does eat up a lot of minutes and, if put on a pairing with a puck moving defenseman such as Chabot, can actually be an effective guy. That being said, another 2 year bridge deal will benefit him and the team greatly. Nothing higher than 3.5 million for him though.

c. Claesson was in Boucher’s dog house for more than half the season. His play suffered because of it. I believe with a little more playing time and some confidence, he can usurp the likes of Borowiecki for that 5th-6th spot. 1 year extension is alright.

6) Resigning the UFA’s:

a. Wideman had a tough end to his season. He has proven to be a reliable puck mover on the back end so I believe that he can be a decent depth defenseman.

b. I thought Paajarvi did alright on the 3rd line. Giving him one more year isn’t a bad idea either.

7) Hoping for a bounce back season from BOTH goaltenders:

a. Anderson needs to be better. Condon needs to be better. If Anderson can’t be better, then Condon needs to be better. If this situation doesn’t work out then Pierre Dorion needs to work the phones fast to fix it.

Those are just some of my thoughts lets discuss more!

Trades
1.
OTT
  1. Tatar, Tomas
  2. 2019 5th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Tatar gets a fresh start and room in the top 6 immediately. Unfortunately, they won't be able to get back what they gave up for Tatar as he hasn't proven to be what Vegas hoped he would be.
VGK
  1. Luchuk, Aaron
  2. Ryan, Bobby ($1,250,000 retained)
  3. 2020 3rd round pick (OTT)
  4. 2020 4th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Ottawa needs to give a little more because of Ryan's contract. Adding Luchuk is necessary. Ottawa has enough depth at the centre position as well so it makes it easier to swallow.
2.
OTT
  1. Stone, Michael
Additional Details:
Adding depth at defense / giving this guy a chance to play for with his younger brother. He has proven to be a decent shutdown / shot blocker. Calgary has enough defense trying to break the ranks that this trade will happen eventually.
CGY
  1. Smith, Zack
Additional Details:
Sending a guy home to add much needed grit and size down the middle on either the 3rd or 4th line. He can also spend some time on the top 6 as he has the capability to score 20+ goals.

I've seen some Calgary mock ups where their fans have offered up Sam Bennett for Smith either throwing in a pick or taking back Brouwer. So I'm guessing Smith could fetch an ok return. Better than Mark's brother at least. The only other thing I would suggest is not having Pyatt at C. I would have him on the wing and have Logan Brown centering the 3rd line with Chlapik at right wing and move Colin White to centre the 4th line.
