myers simmonds trade 1/2

Description
I think Dubas is going to continue to develop within, graduating Marlies when the time is right, and manage expiring contracts to fill current needs and keep the farm system full.

Couple of notes then:

Gardiner on his way out as Dermott is his natural replacement. I think there is a win/win trade with Winnepeg with Myers also on his last year of his current contract. The Jets are heading to cap crunch with some key signings on the horizon, and with a loaded right side on defense, Myers is the odd man out. The trade helps both the Leafs and Jets balance their RD/LD. With Enstrom heading to UFA this year, and Kulikov heading to UFA in 19/20, there is a good opportunity for the Jets to re-sign Gardiner. Gards gets paired with Trouba for stability, and Buff gets paired with Morrisey. That's an interesting top 4 d for the Jets.. The Leafs would also have a good shot (and cap space) to re-sign Myers and pair him with Rielly . Its a win for everyone (and I like Gards, it'd be nice to give him a good landing spot).

The trade for Simmonds gives the Leafs some grit, leadership, character, pp presence and goal scoring. It also allows Nylander to drop into 3C with Simmonds on his left and Kappy on his right. Nylander/Simmonds/Kappy > Bozie/JVR/Brown.

Hyman moves to his strong side on the right and Johnsson slots in on the left with Matthews in the middle.

Marner, Kadri and Marleau stay the same on the second line. Cause why change what works?

Rielly Nash is signed as 4C and has Brown to his right and Grundstrom to his left. Lindholm and Aaltonen hang around as black aces. If Nylander flakes out at 3C then Nash is there as insurance, and either Aaltonen or Lindholm slot as 4c.

Rielly/Myers
Dermott/Zaitsev (Dert takes another step and I'm betting on Zaits getting his game back to what it was before injuries and illness).

Borgman/Hainsey (Borg gets first crack but Lilly follows a similiar development path as Dermott and could unseat Borg by the trade deadline). Either way, Hainsey is there to work his old man magic with the two of them.

We take on a cap dump like Orpik as a 7 d (and get a prize from Washington for freeing up cap space for them to re-sign Carlson) because there's oodles of cap space in 2018/19, and more than enough to sign Mathews, Marner and Kappy, and extend Myers and Simmonds in 2019/20.

All picks stated in proposed trades are for this years draft.

In the Flyers trade, the only thing that is valuable to us is the 1st. You would need to remove the rest and add something of value.

Serious question - On just about every Toronto trade scenario I see McElhinney & Leivo (& often Bracco)

I don't get the McElhinney thing. He is not good. He had a good year, but I have seen people trying to trade him for 2nd and 3rd rd picks or a piece that puts the trade over. The guy is 35 and has a career 2.87 GAA in nearly 200 NHL games. Nobody wants him.

Same with Leivo - He is 25 and hasn't been able to stick with the Leafs over the past 5 years. He doesn't have any real value.

K. Fair enough on all of it. How about Sparks instead of McBackup, Brown instead of Bracco and maybe another pick. But you got to take Leivo.. because #free josh leivo.. and to validate his humanity, and for Philly to feel like a city of brotherly love (which you are). We'd do it and pay him in T.O., but everybody knows we're a bunch of jerks and don'ts treat the people right ..

Because if Willy moves to 3c (and I think that's where he's ultimately gonna land) then the wings need to a shakeup. And cause i think Hyman is better on his strong side. And cause Babs is gonna freak out when he finds out Pollak smash has been taken away from him. Plus, maybe washinton gives us something nice for taking Orpik and giving them room to sign Carlson

You want the Leafs to trade a 1st, Brown and Sparks for Simmonds, another winger??? That makes less than 0 sense for the Leafs. If they are trading their 1st round pick it will not be for a winger... they have NHL quality wingers playing for the Marlies. Not a position of need at all

First, I think you are going after the wrong Winnipeg defender and/or the wrong Myers. If you are making a deal with Philly, odds are the Leafs would want one of Myers or Sanheim, not that any would be easy to acquire. Next, There is no way the Leafs give that up for only 1 year of Simmons, unless I mis-read something somewhere and he is being extended as part of that trade. Even still, I think Garrett Sparks bring the Leafs better value on a deal. I don't think Riley Nash would sign with the Leafs (even though the contract seems about fair) to play at 4C. He is a more than capable 3C and I think would provide more stability and defensive awareness in that spot as opposed to Nylander, who, to me, seems much better suited as a winter. Out of all your deals I probably like the Orpik deal the best, as the prospect or draft pick return could benefit the Leafs in a number of ways. However, the caveat there is that I don't think the Leafs want to do the Caps any favours and by unburdening them of that contract and re-signing John Carlson potentially hurts the Leafs ability to potentially defeat them in the playoffs in future seasons.
