Description

I'm assuming that William Karlsson is going to do exactly what Jonathan Marchessault did and say, "Give me that Reilly Smith contract for 5 or 6 years at $5 million per." That line has incredible chemistry and this would go a long way towards keeping the No Captains mentality.

With that said, John Tavares would be an upgrade over James Neal. Neal has been great for us, but when you get the opportunity to sign a point per game guy you have to do it. Why would he sign for $7 mil/year? He's coming into a great situation in Las Vegas and there is no income tax in Nevada.

Beyond that I can't see messing with the chemistry of the team too much. The identity is still speed and counter attack with reasonably balanced lines.

No income tax or not, Tavares is not going to get paid less than Johanson, Kessel, Draisaitl or Kuznetsov. The standard of franchise player's salary was set by Toews and Kane at $10.5M and Tavares will get at least that on the open market.

That's true if it's all about money and if Tavares wants to just maximize his earnings potential, but there's a lot more to it than that. Most of the teams with decent cap space to sign him don't have much of a chance to make a run for the Cup any time soon. Tavares is 27 and I'm sure wants to play for a contender while he's still in his prime.
