I think the general idea is right, and the Caps should definitely work to re-sign Carlson. Here are a few of my thoughts:

1. Don't think Edmonton is a good target for Orpik. That would give them 5 defensemen getting paid $4M+, and they still have re-sign Nurse. They also only have $10M in cap space right now, with 9 forwards signed.
2. I think Orpik would be better off grouped with Grubauer or Burakovsky. Make the other team take a cap dump in order to get a good player.
3. Coming from an Avalanche fan, I think you could get the Avs to be very interested in Grubauer/Burakovsky because they're struggling with wing & goalie depth. Also, the Avs have a lot of cap room and could easily afford a 1-yr Orpik dump. On top of that, you wouldn't be trading good players inside your division.

1) Terrible terrible return for Gruabuer, a young starter, and Bura, a young top 6 return. Each should be getting a 1st.

2) Don't know why people don't get this: there's plenty of room for Carlson to resign without sending people out. And if you do, buy out Orpik, don't send off 2 young studs.

I don't know about having "plenty" of room for Carlson. Say the cap goes up to $79M, that's still only $12-15M of space right now. If you do re-sign Carlson, I would think all of your signings would take $15-$20M.

Players to re-sign:
Carlson - $7M+
Wilson - $3M+
Grubauer - $3M+
Beagle - $2M
Smith-Pelly, Bowey, Kempny - avg. $1.5M each

I don't think Burakovsky should be moved. I would move Grubauer with Orpik because Holtby is locking down his value in the playoffs right now, and you still have Samsonov. If you move Grubauer with Orpik, you're freeing up $8-9M of cap space. And Grubauer played well enough in the regular season to get some extra value coming back (on top of the Orpik cap dump).
