The term is a little scary, I don't think the last 3 or 4 years will be great. Although, happy to be proven wrong. Wish him and SJ best of luck.

I know that San Jose had a lot of cap space, and Kane was an upcoming UFA in a shallow market, but man, that is a lot of money to commit to a player who's never hit 60 points.

none of the years will be great. he's done gots paid, so now he'll go back to being a 20-20 guy at best.

This is a good deal for Evander Kane! I really do want SJS to do well, their fans deserve it for sure. This is way too much money for his services. I don't see how they can be happy. He got an extra ~$1.5M - $2M for a truly solid 2.5 weeks from Feb 27th to March 16th racking up points 10 points in 8 games against clearly top opponents like EDM, CHI, CGY, DET. He's a fine player, both sides are better off together vs apart, but he's not worth $7M a year...not worth $6M a year.

in a vacuum, I'd call this a bad contract - however, given SJs situation I can understand it. how many years of contention do the sharks have left? maybe it's already too late, but with Pavelski and Burns aging, Couture and Kane in their prime.. it's okay to overpay up front. maybe isn't gonna be a 35 goal scorer at 30 anymore, but you pay them for their primes and tolerate them getting paid when they are in the back years of their contracts. a similar thing happened to Rick Nash (and the Rangers got an okay return for him at age 33 with a higher cap hit and probably lower production!) in 2 or 3 years, the sharks won't be signing UFAs anyway. they won't be in a cap crunch and that's why paying Kane now is WAY better than letting him go to UFA just because they wanted to save 500k on him.

I agree. San Jose is in win now mode with a shallow prospect pool, and they needed more speed and scoring, especially with their core of veterans (Pavelski, Burns, Vlasic, Thornton(?), Braun) getting up there in age. It's not nearly as bad as most UFA contracts, given that Kane is only 26 compared to the 28-30 we usually see. But San Jose definitely needed to do something big to give their club some more life. It's kind of like the Ryan Johansen contract; it's definitely an overpay, but the team desperately needed that player to fill in the hole that was missing. The players had all the leverage in both situations.

man for 7 years i expected Kane to sign between 5 and 6m.
This is far too much money AND he also has a no trade list of 27 teams? bad contract.

I don't even know what to say about this. But so far I think it is a horrible signing. But I guess we will see come the season starts.

I'm not surprised he did this because he only cares about money. But my god this contract sucks. San Jose will not be competitive when this deal ends. Both term and cap hit are awful.

While I don't completely disagree, he has never played on a team that has won a single postseason game. He's only played on a single team that made it to the post season and he was injured a majority of that year and in the playoffs.

I think this is going to have an impact on some other signings this summer, most notably guys like JVR and Nylander.

He has a reputation of wanting a ton of money. Here's proof. It's old but basically he posted that and him doing push ups with money on his back and basically showed off his money and how rich he was. That last contract he had was too much money as well. I tried to post the image but I just posted the article with the image. Hope has matured but who knows.

what I'm saying is: this is a COMPLETELY void statement. every professional tries to make money, every organization wants to save money. both parties agree on a deal if they think it fits their interests. this is how contracts work. you try to make it seem like he's extorting them. he asked for some and he got it for the reasons i stated above.

Is this a bad contract? absolutely. But San Jose also, intentionally I believe, inflated the price off all other free agent wingers for every other team with this deal. Guys like JVR, Perron, Neal, Maroon, Grabner can all expect a bigger paycheck now. Even guys like Nylander, Zucker, Stone, Miller as RFAs will be vying for more lucrative deals.

Although, with the Sharks rumored to be "all in" on Tavares. Not sure if San Jose can still be in the running with their current cap situation, also with them still having to resign Hertl and Tierney.

As a sharks fan,I liked Kane at the end but 7M per 7YRS is too much especially for a person like Kane. The sharks are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to re signing hertl, tierney, demelo.

Can't say I am a fan of the length and terms, I have a feeling as stated above that 2-3 seasons down the road, SJ will be looking to trade this contract after he fails to live up to a 7m a year payday.

And with a list of 27 teams he can't be traded to, that will prove rather difficult.

Way too high of a contract for a guy who hit 30 goals one time. Not good at all.
