pretty sure it was alluded that Carlson does not want to sign in Canada if he goes to market. I believe Friedman mentioned that on one of his podcasts

It was mentioned in a roundabout way, talking Carlson as a Leafs target and a subtle comment that early word is that he isnt intersected in signing with Canadian Markets.
But who knows by July 1st if he gets there what he feels like

Ferraro had an interested comment too last month too on twitter
"It won’t be 5 years ...7x $7mm...can’t believe for a second he would sign in Canada"

Hamilton > Kessel.
Top 2 D man > Scoring winger.

Maybe I could have added a little to Kessel but I am dealing for a position of strength... Girodano, Brodie, Hamonic, Andersson, Fox, Kylington and bringing in something that we need. Kessel could go on the top line but the lines would be unbalanced, you would have one scoring line and then a line of young unproven players.

Smith or a FA goalie is going to be resigned around the same cap, Bennet and Ferland aswell if not more

What?! No haha Hamilton is a legit #1 Dman on a great contract that's just 24 years old. Kessel is a top 15 winger that's 30. If you are going to trade Hamilton you better get a much young, cheaper, better winger.

Caps match $7M easily. Only way Caps don't sign him is if he goes $8M+. Carlson isn't going West, he's an East Coast kid. NJD (hometown) or NYI for him if Caps don't sign him which is undoubtfull

Your right, should have added something to Kessel, only other deal I see possible is Nylander from Toronto but with Carlson on the market they may not need Hamilton, if you look at one of my other comments I pointed out that I am dealing from a position of strength and filling a hole, Pittsburgh needs another Dman that can take some of the weight off Letang and Kessels name has been thrown around.

I hear yeah but Hamilton is not only a #1 dman but he's a #1 right handed dman. Those are a rare commodity. Plus he's only 24. You should keep him unless you're getting a gem back.
